I had some plumbing work done at my house and they had to put some holes in the drywall. How big of hole can you patch with those drywall screens vs needing to cut the drywall back to the studs and putting in a new small piece of drywall?

I've found success in placing one or two (depending on repair size) 1x2 pieces of wood behind the hole and attaching with drywall screws. Then just insert the patch piece into the hole with drywall screws and finish the joint.

I wouldn't patch anything over 1" with the screen....

It's not has hard as you think....and you don't need wood....at least not for small holes say up to 8"...

Got to HD and get a 2x2 sheet (they sell those smaller cut sheets for repairs).

Take some drywall tape...cut 4 strips that are about 4" wider/longer than the patch.

Lay the tape out so that it looks like #. Put mud on it and then lay the patch on top....

Mud the edges of the patch and the hole....

Now carefully push the patch into the hole....the tape is on the backside of the patch but sticks out and will fold down against the wall on the outside....you can adjust the patch by just pulling on the tape....

Once you have it where you want it...run more tape and mud down the seams....

Let it dry for a day or two and then go back and do your other two coats of mud with sanding in between....then finish to match the wall...

The only time I would cut back to the wall is if I was within about 4-5" of it...

I normally just cut it out between the stud centers and put a new piece in. I always feel it is more secure attaching it to the studs.

I agree with dd...........

Drywall repair isnt that hard. Takes a bit of practice but its not hard to learn.

I wouldnt bother with a screen either. Just cut a section from stud to stud, and drop the new piece in.

If youre not good with mud and you dont mind looking at the project, take multiple days for laying your mud on.

Start very, very thin. Do one coat of mud each day for a few days. If you apply it daily in super thin coats you will not have to sand much, if at all.

Good luck to ya

I tried that mesh stuff once and absolutely hated it! It is so much easier to square up the hole, cut a piece of drywall to fit that hole, and then back it with some 1x or even a strip of drywall (I prefer 1x myself.)
