What -B- is saying is that a patent is very expensive for an ordinary person to file for and get, and in the case of patent infringement, even 'garbage men' lawyers will cost a pretty penny, not to mention related fees.********! Lawyers are like garbage men, many are around, only couple do the job worth a ****.
Make sure you have an agreement to be mentioned as an inventor and to collect a small percentage of product sold.
I thought that was implied.

In trying to file for a patent, one doesn't "need" a patent lawyer or agent, but they can be very beneficial in the long run. A good patent is prepared to be as all-encompassing as it can be, and this can make the difference between a competitor profiting from a slightly different process or product, and patent infringement.
