Hello all, been lurking around here for ideas and am amazed at what talent and ingenuity y'all have. After living in our home for 8 years, we finally are going to put a garage on the house. We didn't want the garage to be larger than the house, so we a going with a 24x24 attached with a full dormer on one side and a 17' shed dormer on the other. The garage will have an 100 amp sub panel. The upstairs room will be for storage and a workout room. Eventually the upstairs will be attached to the main house and turn into a master suite.

The permit was finally issued by the city after 1.5 months of review and the contractor will start digging the foundation tomorrow. I am beyond excited.

The masons came today. Worked a solid eight hours with a high of 98, hear index of 110.

The masons finished up today, and I had a few questions for y'all.

First, does anyone have a concern with the patch of brick instead of block being used? They had block left over after the build but I noticed this after they left for the day.

Second, the masons came back and took a lot of Roanoke cement and brick/block but left a large portion of brick beside the house. How long should I let it sit there before I call them or is it mine? It will be in the way of the concrete truck when the slab is poured.

Looks like a great start.

I wouldn't worry about the patch of brick. It is just as strong as the block the way it is installed. I do wonder why they did it like that, unless maybe they were a few blocks short and figured they would fill it with the extra bricks they ordered and hide it down inside the stem wall. I'd say you probably paid for those bricks because they ordered to much. I've seen that a lot with builders. They basically look at it like you paid for it and rather than return it back to the supplier and pay a restocking fee and refund you some money, Plus picking that pallet that's fixin to bust open, they take the easy road and let you deal with your new pallet of grass killer. Maybe have them build you a nice mail box out of it or a garden wall. Or call them and tel them to come get the extra bricks and refund some cash.

The brick just might be yours. If it was special ordered to match your existing brick, you may be the owner of a extra pallet of brick.

If it's yours, it might be time to lay up an nice and small outdoor BBQ.

It turns out that the masons just needed some prodding to pick up the rest of the brick, oh well. Not much progress, but the girls sure are loving "helping out".

Just a question. Are you leaving out the master bedroom work because of permit issues? In other words you didn't want to muddy the waters with the planning department?

With the two little ones our current bedroom configuration works out well. The three bed rooms are close together so we can hear them if they call out in the night. Later on with three ladies in the house it will defiantly be a benefit to have a second full bathroom, but we don't need it now.

Also, I don't like getting loans for items that are luxuries. This gives us longer to save up to do a nice master suite.

The weather finally cleared up yesterday, and the slab was poured.

Not too much of a slope.

The wife and girls wanted to do handprints but they waited too long. It will just have to wait for the driveway to be poured.

So the driveway will be on the opposite side of the house, or did they put the door openings on the wrong wall?

The driveway has not been created yet. It will go around the side of the garage the doors are on. We plan on pouring a large slab between the garage to the fence.

So I came home yesterday and the framing is mostly done! They still have to build the stairs, and put in a few windows they missed. Next up, some shingles!

So after a month and a half of the framers not showing up. While we were waiting we went ahead and had them plan and build the connection.They finally finished framing and siding last week. The electrician will finish up this week. Getting down to the little things like paint, doors, and gutters.

It's a 1979 Cj5. I've owned it for 7 years but has been in various stages of rebuild during that time. Being as it has been at various rental garages since I've owned it, i've only put about 25 miles on it! Hopefully I will be able to spend more time on it now that it is just out the back door.

The sides of the main house have no overhang. It was done to try to match the existing house.
