Here's what you want . . . . totally safe with it's own Low Oxygen Sensor.

Big Buddy with the optional hose kit for 20 lb BBQ bottle of propane.

Our car club bought one about 2 years ago for our meetings in one of the guy's shop. BIG building - 60x100 I think. We take up maybe 20x20 floor space during the meetings and the heater works great. Keeps from having to heat the entire building for a hour or so. I think someone found it on sale for like $99.

We picked up the stainless version from Home Depot for $99 on sale.
Works great with the deflector. Wind does play a factor though.

They say outside use only because of fumes and moisture.
Both will be noticeable within an hour in a typical garage.

I installed a Soleus 17,500btu 220v electric heater in my 24x30 last year and it works great, last winter at like 20deg outside my garage was a nice 70deg..

That would be useless in that big of a space

Depends if OP has insulated garage or not. Sounds to me like OP is looking for temporary heat with propane. Since he doesn't say I'm assuming he DOES have insulation. Also, assuming he's NOT in Antarctica, as he's thinking of using "patio heater" inside a garage. :eyecrazy:

The Big Buddy will crank out 18K Btu and with the AC/DC electric cord, it has it's own built-in fan. He'd need optional hose kit and 20 lb BBQ bottle of propane, then OP would have 23'x31' garage warmed up in 30 minutes. Once the OP got his permanent heat going, then the Big Buddy would be backup or spot heater.

Conversely, the OP's idea of patio heater will result in undesirable / UNSAFE heat in garage, plus a patio paperweight when he gets permanent garage heat. ;)

my garage is a metal. not insulated. in ny. I don't want to heat the whole thing. just a coner when the guys come for coffee. those tall patio heaters have wheels to move around in case I haveto move it. will the fumes be that much of an issue 24x31x 15 high?

I had one of the stove pipe type heaters 10 years ago and it worked very well 'til it crapped out last year, I replaced it with this in my 36x40 with 12' cielings. It heats the entire shop in about 20 minutes, then you have to shut it off 'cause it will cook you.

I do intend to put a fan system in now to keep the heat lower, but I was going to do that 10 years ago and haven't got around to it yet.

I slept less than 10 feet from one of these growing up.....in a 10x14 bedroom.....with the door shut at times.....and lived to tell about it.

How is that any more risky than a propane patio heater in a 5000+ sq ft shop???

Oh, and IBTL. Har!
