Paving stone Polymeric Sand Washout

I have about a 3’ overhang on the front of my garage. I don’t want to put up eavestrough it as it would be unsightly and overkill for this problem. The rain is dripping over the edge and washing out the polymeric sand that sets in the flagstone paving stone.
What I was thinking was a type of speed bump that that is a little overkill as well. Even small speed bumps are a minimum of 2” in height and 12” wide. But that maybe the best I can find to diffuse the washing out of the sand. The black rubber with the yellow stripe would be fine with me as it would give it that gas station look. The product would not be nailed down so it’s mass would have to keep it in place.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.

That last picture it looks like there is no polymetric sand at all. Once mine set up it has a rubber feel like silicone glue, but does not wash out. If I pick it then a chunk will break off, but not little grains of sand.
Try a different brand of sand first maybe?

I have polymeric sand in my front brick sidewalk, and it eventually will have to be replaced - you get enough water on it and it will wash out of the cracks.


Maybe under that area where the water is dripping off the roof you could use a silicone caulk instead of the sand? The trick would be matching the color so it doesn't look funny.

Oaks "1OneSand" has a lot of latex in it and hardens quite hard. I have no gutters at all and my 40x50 roof drops on it from 14', no wash out. Make sure you wet it properly and let it harden before the next rain.

Made in Canada too.

I don't think gutters would be unsightly nor overkill. You clearly live an area that freezes, I would want to get that water away from there so it doesnt leave a sheet of ice even if the sand in the joints wasn't an issue.

The polymeric sand that I have installed is almost as hard as concrete when you are finished with it. If it is put in the joints properly it will not come out anytime soon. I wonder if whoever installed it did not properly sweep it in, or water it in. I have also seen them put regular sand in the joints first and then switch to the polymeric sand for just the top because of cost. This can cause thin areas and issues also.

Sometimes they just don't get the polymeric installed right, try again and it will likely be ok.

That looks like a great product. Checked their website to see if there is a distributor in our area. Most of them are around Toronto and from there down to the US. There is one in Surrey BC still a bit of a stretch. The latex might be the answer. I will wait to hear back from them to see if a distributor is closer.

Most of the water drains off the back of the building towards the fence. From there it collects and exits about 4 lots down. So the amount of water from the overhang hits the driveway which is contoured towards our garden area.

I bought all the product including a full pallet of sand and had it installed by a fellow who is in the business. He may have cut it with normal sand on the bottom. I know I returned a lot of product to the supplier but I did keep a couple of bags just in case.

"cutting it" by prefilling with regular jointing sand is not exactly cutting corners: in my area it's industry standard for bricks with particularly large/rough joints.

I am going for a gas station look so the look would be fine with me. If I didn't like it I could simply pick them up. I now have a gas pump in front of the garage thanks to one of GJs former poster namely Bronson. I think the yellow and black humps would fit right in.

Exactly the gutters I feel would take away the clean look of the building. Will try the polymeric again.

The product is made by Barkman which manufactures the whole gambit of paving stone. Those paving stones cover 1.2 sq.ft at a time so install goes a hell of a lot faster than when I did the front yard. But this time I hired it out, if I hadn't my wife may have killed me.
