Pawn shop and tools question

Making my first trip ever to a pawn shop tomorrow. My question: is it acceptable to try and deal on their asking price for tools?

Are pawn shops like a regular store and the marked price is what it is....or do they negotiate with their asking price like they do with what they offer to the original owner?

some prices are just too high for the market in that case you can negotiate. but for other items in the buck o' sockets that kind of stuff is priced fairly cheap typically

I always negotiate! Recently I went to one and they had the same Snap On burr set from the past couple visits marked at $99. I noticed the sticker had a date of 2010. That meant it was in their inventory for some time (usually they will drop the price). I asked whats the lowest they would take for it and they said $50!! I wasn't expecting that much off, so, I bought it!!!

It was deffinetly worth the time to talk them down. You just never know how willing they are to sell. Good luck!

I've been in one of the local shops many times to look around but never bought anything. The prices they had were about the same as brand new stuff. So last week I noticed a nice little Dewalt angle grinder with the case and a segmented diamond blade with a price of $55. I asked the guy if he'd take $30, and he jumped on it. I went back today poking around and saw a nearly new Craftsman 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" drive socket set for $50. I asked the guy (different guy than I dealt with last week) if he'd take $25, and I thought he was gonna kick me outta the store. He told me the price they have on it is the lowest they can take, and I thought what a bunch of BS, so I left. I'll go back next week, and if it's still there I'll look for the other guy and make another offer.

So some guys are more willing to deal than others - don't be afraid to make an offer. It's kind of like shopping at a flea market.

On Ebay I won a Snap on Metric set of line wrenches off of a local pawn Store at a god price that I had previous been in and gave up on them because of their insane prices. I had expected them to not let me off of the $12 dollars shipping completely but they did. I am going to offer what the items would sell for on eBay next time they have something worth buying and see what happens.

Because of this forum I have started to frequent some shops around town. I always haggle or offer a price but I wait to do it when no other customers are around. Sometimes it works and sometimes not so well. I have found that COMPLETE Craftsman and Snap-On socket and wrench sets are gold around here and they do not give too much of a break.

Be ready to dig through boxes off single sockets, wrenches and drivers to find the treasure. Always bring cash and offer with cash out the door prices.

I have bought some tools from pawn shops that are on Ebay selling items.I "stole" a $600.00 Mac 3/8 drive set,metric and standard paying $92.00 which was on Ebay.Came from a pawn shop out of Georgia,came out of a toolbag and the original owner never picked it up owing money.Same with my 2 Snap On air ratchets,pawnshops out of Colorado and Virginia that were purchased on Ebay with no buy it now option bidding on it.

I was out mowing the grass and thought of 2 more things...
1. Try to bundle or get pricing on a group or handful of tools over pricing each one individually
2. Look for the less known brands like Williams, Bonny, Cornwell, Proto, etc. Last week I picked up a 12" and 8" Proto adjustable wrenches for $1.00 each because the pawn guy only knows Snap-On, Mac and Craftsman.

I went back to one of the pawn shops right outside of the Army Post and saw that they still had a Snap on S936 1/2 drive ratchet wrench that's been sitting their for awhile. After buying a oil filter wrench for $1.75 and talking to the guy for about 1/2 hr about motorcycles I asked about the ratchet wrench and what his bottom price was. He let me have it for $30 + tax. Most of his good tools are very over priced but I lucked out on that one.

I usually go to my local pawn shop once a week or every other week. It is not a very busy pawn shop, so each time I go I clean them out of any good USA tools. I have never spent more then $25, and usually get a few handfuls of tools. The guy used to say "$20", but now he says "make me an offer". About a 1/4 of all my tools have come from there.

Every pawn shop I've been to in my area stick by their prices (which are high) and won't negotiate much at all. No biggie to me because they rarely if ever have anything worth buying. Mostly big box store tools and consumer grade power tools. Heading to SC tomorrow for a few weeks and hoping to check out some pawn shops down there. With any luck, I'll find a few hidden treasures and I'll get to try out some of the tips posted on this thread.
