It’s time we had a thread on pawn shop finds so here it is. I’m lucky that I have a few good ones locally and usually I get some decent deals. If I get a great deal on something it’ll go in the box to be used at some point even if I don’t need it at the time. I’ll start off with the snap on shallow 15mm universal impact socket I got today for 10¢. I’m guessing it was mixed in with a bunch of random stuff they threw in the socket bins. It’s definitely used, but has some life left in it. I’ll clean it up and oil it at some point. Our ranch trucks have a lot of 15mm bolts so it’ll come in handy.

I've only been into a pawn shop once in the past 15 years probably. My buddy had gone in one and saw the Matco PCFOLD light in there and so I went the next day and bought it. Hadn't really been used too much, I've definitely put it through more abuse than the PO. Think I got it for $65 or $70.

Grabbed this today and the guy running the shop let me have it since it was the only thing I wanted. The writing on it was just good enough to see that it was a Cornwell. It’s made in Taiwan so I’m guessing it’s a blue power, but can’t complain. I’ve been trying to track down a set of these non offset ratcheting wrenches in metric and sae and this is one of the sizes I’ll use the most on Toyotas.

$1. Needs some TLC but it has potential. Marked “Craftsman BB“ push drill but a duplicate of a Millers Falls 108.

I never go into Pawn Shops, always afraid I'm going to buy someone's stolen item. Thrift stores and the occasional estate sale are more my jam . . . Congrats on the find though. (y)
It’s definitely something I’ve thought about. I know here in Texas everything goes into a database that law enforcement has access to and sits on the shelves for a couple of months to make sure people have a chance to find it if their stuff hits a pawn shop. I’ve been in a couple before when local deputies were getting stolen stuff from the shop owners that was found via that database. I figure stolen stuff can pop up just about anywhere. That old man’s estate sale could also be full of tools that were stolen years ago from a workplace and never found. I just keep track of where I bought it from and if I get a knock on the door I’ll gladly turn it over to the police as long as they have proof it was stolen.

I need to learn more about older stuff as I wouldn’t have even known what that was. There is a set of hk porter 1892 bolt cutters that I almost jumped on, but it looks like someone swapped out the cutting portion with a rigid u18 head and the handle was broken and welded back at some point.

Being former law enforcement, I'm probably a little jaded on the subject 💯.

Seen too many Pawn Shop owners game the system and sell things they either knew (or should have known were stolen). Most victims don't write down their serial numbers on many high dollar items, let alone on a 5/8 wrench. Again, I'm jaded, so I just avoid Pawn Shops all together as a general rule. It's an industry I just cannot support. Not knocking those that do, it's just a personal choice for me.

Happy hunting.

I looked for quite a while after my tools were stolen at various pawn shops, most of my tools had my name engrave don them. never found a single one :-\ I figure they probably took it outside of the local area to sell them.

I think most stolen stuff these days ends up on Facebook marketplace. Most thieves don’t want shops having their ID info if the police show up. I actually bought a bunch of snap on stuff that had a former classmate’s name engraved on them. Looked him up on Facebook and found out that they were from when his towing company shut down due to medical problems. I’m sure there’s been a couple things I’ve bought that came from questionable people, but I legally bought it and have no problems returning it if so. I get a lot of stuff super cheap due to being a decent customer so I wouldn’t be out a whole lot.

Dug these two out of a bin earlier this week. The snap on t27 socket is in decent enough shape to throw it in the ranch box, but it needs a new bit. Will the newer style pinless bits just press into the older socket? The Mac wrench was nice to find as I don’t usually see those around here. I’ve been coming across a lot of vintage Mac stuff in my grandfather’s storage and I’m trying to hunt down more to fill up a smaller box to make a good starter setup for my son when he’s older.
