Your Pawnshopping sprees would be like awakening from a dream and finding things are for real... Nice scores on the 3/4 drive Wright socket set and loaded boxes

Thanks. I would like to claim it was all due to superior haggling skills but the truth is I was just in the right places at the right times. I am usually on the other end of these things.

I found my Bridgeport at a pawn shop.

It is a 1967 Vram, step pulley head with a 42" table which is in very good condition with just one drill hit. Backlash was only 0.010" in both X & Y, with chrome ways with scraping markings still quite apparent.

Paid $900.

Sold my Chinese made table-top mill-drill for $800, so it was nearly a wash.

The automatic down feed didn't work but I easily fixed that by replacing a small pinion gear.

Cleaned it up and it's working beautifully.

I installed a VFD for running the 3-phase motor from my 1-phase power source.

You sir, most definitely deserve a YOU ****!! What a steal!!

Boy you guys got some sick deals there. The best score I got at a pawn shop was down in southern Alabama. Stopped in a place to kill some time and here is a Mac 3/4" torque wrench in the box for $125. I started rummaging around and picked a bunch of USA tools. Mostly sockets and drivers. Got on of the S&K swivel head ratchets in 3/8" drive. Anyway I walked out with the torque wrench and 3 pop flats of tools for something like $170. Needless to say I was stoked and I can use everything as I restore tractors and need those big tools. WooHoo. Sorry no pics as this was 2 or 3 years ago now.

Cool thread.

Due to ridiculous import duties and a weak currency, the cost of well known tool brands in South Africa is excessive, so many of my tools are Pawnshop sourced. It does require hours of scratching through dirty boxes and broken tools to find a treasure though. Here are a couple....

Mitutoyo micrometers. The first one I picked up for the equivalent of around $1, the second one was $8. Both were in very good nick. New ones are just way out of my price league.

Ridgid 14" offset pipe wrench. $5....

Dewit welding clamp. Had a rough life, but still clicks in perfectly - $11. New Taiwanese imported ones are twice the price. Something like an Irwin or Gedore would be about 4 times the price.

Not sure what the Starrett set went for, my brother picked them up for me. :D

Mitutoyo dial gauge and magnetic base. Can't recall the price as it was too long ago, but was a steal.

On top of these I picked up dozens of German and US made wrenches, English made steel rules, scribes, engineers squares, air tools etc. Always a fraction of the price of new items.

Today I bought a gimmicky husky ratchet and proto pliers with some small jacobs drill chuck keys. 3 bucks

Pays off to wait, since I wanted to buy one of those ratchets from Home Depot but they were out of stock, In the end I got it for a buck

No pictures. But I picked up a yellow snap on slotted screwdriver for 2 bucks. Was 4, and before I said anything the guy said "ill give it to you for 2 bucks" Not in front of me right now or I would post a pic. Also got the gear wrench serpentine kit for 25 bucks. Had it for 50, and I said "25" and he said sure. I always have good luck at pawn shops. I know and deal with a lot of them. To me the flea markets took a dive in the last few years.
