Here is my latest rescue from the local establishment:

score.jpg

From top to bottom:
Snap On 3/4" SOEX24
MATCO RBL1315M
Snap On 7/16" OEX14A
Snap On FL749 long handle round head ratchet.

Got all this stuff for about $50.

How the hell do you open up this ratchet? I'd like to clean it up and oil it (it's a little coarse), but I don't want to destroy it in the process of opening it up. I think there is a ring of some sort that I have to remove - looks like spring steel:

How'd you get that ****** off?

No idea.

I hand it to the snap-on guy, and he chases me down and hands it back when he's done. :D :D :D

Good find, though. One of the local pawnshops has a Snappy MT308M for $70. I've been eyeing it for about a month, since they're $219 new, and mine is ancient...

I have seen some others with that style of assembly. There is an end showing there with a finger or part of a half moon shape on the end. I have just used a small screwdriver to get the end out of the groove and unwind it out of there. Don't get the spring in a real kink and you should not have a problem. It is easier if you have the ratchet in a vise or clamped down some way.

Thanks Scott.... got it open. Not too hard with a pick.

Check out all the teeth... this doesn't look too bad inside. Think I'll clean it with some simple green and a tooth bruch and then just oil it.

my advise for myself as If i see the tool that i know it is overprice at tool truck as like Snap on screwdriver that dealer will sell for 20 bucks (depend what kind) and pawn store will sell for 5 dollars the it is good deal if handle is good condition.

or tool truck(any brands) sockets set for about 50 dollars instead 200 dollars a set then it is good deal. try make a figure if it is save money or not. like i did bought blue point brake caliper screw set that price list for 227 dollars at tool truck but i paid 55 dollars at pawn store as it only use few time but in very good condition.....

I believe all the round-head Snap-On ratchets have 72 teeth. 5 degrees of movement per click will probably make it one of your favorite tools. :D

Yeah... most likely. I already cleaned all the disassembled parts with water and simple green (worked very well), dried them and have them sitting in a cup of ****** fluid overnight.

Why in a cup of ****** fluid and not in a cup of motor oil?? :)

There aren't any detergents in motor oil. ;)
Actually, I wasn't sure either... but I had heard about people soaking their ratchets in ****** fluid overnight and decided to give it a go....

Then why do they refer to motor oil as "detergent oil" and "non detergent oil"?????? :headscrat :headscrat :headscrat

Most motor oil does contain detergent additives, but not nearly as many as transmission fluid does. Many people will run a few quarts of ATF in the crankcase for a short time to clean dirt and sludge out of an engine, free sticky lifers, etc.

Good finds! I have the full set of those Matco long box wrenches (metric) I love em to death. I actually find myself using them alot especially to break stuff loose without fearing it slipping off an open end.

That Snap-on ratchet looks like it'll clean up nicely.. the teeth look good.

Good stuff

Oh this reminds me... most of the pawn shops around KC want an arm and a leg for stuff. I never find a "deal" it seems like. Most of them will only budge 10-15% on the price too.. which ***** when they are already close to list.

That's because KC is full of suckers that have no idea what tools should cost. The pawn shops charge what the market will bare. I have browsed the shops in KC, my older brother is an architect down there, they are 3/4 or full book price on most name brand tools. What I can't believe is they are almost as high on chinesse and tiawan stuff as well. The shops in Omaha and Council bluffs are better to work with. They put the retail price on the item and their price at 1/2 of that.

We could trade stuff since your in a higher market. I can buy stuff up here for you to sell down there, and you could save money.

Hey Bullfrog,
Who's your older brother? What architecture firm does he work for? I work for BRR Architecture, which is based out of KC but I'm in a satellite office down in NW AR.

Man I used to know some folks who worked at BRR.. its been ages though. I actually used to work for Hillier (based in Princeton, NJ) here in their KC design/site office on the Sprint World Headquarters project. Then being young and well.. you know; I decided to leave the world to pursue other avenues. Now I kinda wished I'd kept my CAD skills up.. it'd make me a little bit more marketable/diverse for a "day job" at least. Anyways... you work with anyone in the KC office directly?

Quite a few of them actually. I joined them last june but I've know the company for a long time. I was their counterpart when I was in the Wal-Mart architecture group back in 97. Are you thinking of someone in particular?

Most of the guys I knew over there left to go to other firms; etc... Richard Bartholomew was one guy I worked with alot but he actually left BRR to work for Hillier on the Sprint project. There was a guy up here who lived a few houses down from me who moved down to AR to take a job working in Wal-Marts store design/layout dept. Hell if I can remember his name though! haha. Sounds like your working on alot of retail space layout/etc. Fun stuff... my biggest issue is at Hillier they used MicroGDS.. so my familiarity w/ AutoCAD/Autodesk products runs out a few years ago :)

Does your old neighbor actually work for Walmart or is he with BRR working on Walmart? That's all we do in this office in AR

Edit: Sorry about jacking the thread
