Pawn shop pondering, machine tools.

I'm in Sioux Falls SD, My MIL passed away and we have been dealing with that, as a bit of a distraction I have been stopping by the pawn shops, not really looking for anything in particular but with open eyes to any good deals.

Well In my first visit to one of them I spotted a Kennedy box and side box when I looked through it there were a lot of machinist tools. dial and digital calipers, quite a few micrometers in several different sizes, and styles. and what really caught my eye was a tap guide. When I asked about it they told me that the "boss" didn't want to break it up and that I would have to buy it all, boxes and tools.

On that first visit I was quoted $4500 for everything, so I bought a 1 1/2 inch combination wrench and a video game for my son.

I stopped back with out the boy to take a bit more time to dig through the tools and was quoted $2300 for the boxes and tools, still more then I wanted to pay and I would need the wifes okay on a purchase that big, so I passed and took home a greenfield #6 tap wrench die holder and a few taps and dies that were in the box for $12.

This morning I went back again took a real good look at the contents of the Kennedy boxes, which are in pristine condition they look like they have never been used.

We went back and forth a bit and I loaded up the boxes and tools for $2100 + the governers share.

Here are the quick pics I took while unloading the drawers.

I will update later with better pics of all the tools.

I don't need or want the boxes themselves any idea what they are worth, we are having an estate sale this weekend and I would like to sell them here and not have to haul them home.

Kennedys have awful resale value, if you get $200 or more for them both I would be happy.

I would say $150-$200 for the pair...around here (lots of tool and die workers) that entire setup would only fetch $500 or so...

Sorry about your MIL.

Too bad I didn't live closer. I love the old school style brown Kennedy boxes. I'd buy those in a heartbeat.

Good score on the tools. Probably worth way more than $2k.

I just looked them up on MSC and the combo new is about $1700.

I am going to list them at $1000

7 drawer roller, 5 drawer side chest and the folding shelf.

While I really don't "need" them I am willing to keep them if I don't get my price.

Sorry for your MIL.

I didn't know the kennedy name, so I checked cl out of curiosity. Here in central VA, there are 2 listed similar to yours. A clean 8 drawer asking 775 and described as new, and another 7 drawer (bottom is higher and front swings up) showing use asking 250.

Yard sales attract real bargain hunters (much more than CL, IMO) and so I doubt you'd be happy with any offerings. Might be less trouble to list it there (on CL) and then again if you take it home.

There were a few more things in the box, the 2nd clamp for the v-block set, several machinist jacks, an edge finder and misc. drill bits and other small tooling.

For the moment I will be keeping most of the tools, I will be sending a package to Keith Fenner for his "Whats in your box giveaway".

If you don't know what that is check it out, each year he gives away a box full of tools to a deserving soul who is starting out in the machinist trades. I believe that this year he is giving away 3. I can't think of a better way to pass along the love of tools and machine work.

It is cool to see all the machinist tools. Reminds me of my Grandfather. The Kennedy chest looks nice also. I have never seen a Kennedy in person.

Glad my post brought you a good memory!

My maternal grandfather was a master carpenter so I get the same feeling when I see an old carpenters box. The kind they made themselves out of wood.

My Grandfather on my Dad's side was the machinist. Unfortunately he died before I was born. I only know him from pictures, stories, and the tools he left behind. I have his Gerstners machinist chest. When I was little I use to sit and look at his tools that filled the chest and imagine him working with them and even showing me how to use them. My Dad eventually sold the tools that filled the chest. Some of the old carpenters boxes a really cool.

Well I had it the boxes out during the estate sale and got a few offers highest being $650. I was talking out loud about calling the guy and seeing if he would go $700 and the wife heard me and put her 2 cents in, She thinks I should keep the boxes and use them as part of my Steevo style bench build.

Since I have her blessing the idea is growing on me. 1 or both Kennedy boxes on one side with a Master force 41 or a HF 44 on the other with a desk space in between.

If I were you I would take the $650-$700 and run. And then get a hf box for your build.

Go to your local factory. All you'll see is Craftsmans and Kennedys

Taking a break from loading the U-Haul for a trip to drop off donation stuff, MIL was a clothes horse, we have 15 55 gal bags of good clothing to drop off at a place called Kids Inn, a transition place for mothers and kids.

Anyhow I stopped back at the pawn shop this morning on my way to U-Haul and found a few more goodies.

Here is the hand tapper that came with the kennedy boxes and machinist tools.
I have been looking for one and it is what drew my eye to start with.

Today I picked up this set of Rhino ramps, they were asking $24 and I offer $10.

Then I had looked at this CM 3/4 drive set and box the last time I was there, but the $120 they quoted was just to much, it is in rough shape, with chipping chrome and a bit of rust and the ratchet is seized.
Today I offer $30 and after a bit of back and forth I picked it up for $50 I need to order a rebuild kit for the ratchet and I might have it re chromed.

And last up since the wife asked me to take a pic is our daughters new ride (MIL's car) 2010 Honda CRV with 55k on it.

I need to add this,

We are headed home tomorrow and I am so glad that this pawn shop is not in my home town, there are way to many goodies packed in there. I would be tool rich and cash poor.

I got lucky today, they have a very nice Cornwall 4 drawer cart that I looked at several times, but since I hadn't picked up the U-Haul trailer yet and the Tahoe is just about full I was able to walk away, just barely though.
