Pawn shop score or not?

I picked up this 10" pipe wrench at a local pawn shop today for a buck. There were two, one used and one new. I put the new one on the counter and asked " How much for this one and how much for the new one over there?" He took a glance and said a buck and 5 bucks for the new one. So i gave him a buck and left. I win.

It looks brand new and never used. The teeth are pretty sharp. Whats the quality like on this thing? Iv never used one and cant think of a reason i would use one right now but i couldn't pass it up for a buck. Setting the toe on alignments maybe? What do you guys use them for?

I don't know anything about the particular model you bought, but even though stanley is sold at wal-mart among many other stores, it really isn't that bad. I say you got a good deal, i'm sure it will do it's job for you.

So you basically defrauded the store owner and are proud of that and say you won. What a sleazey thing to do. If you think you will get far in life by being dishonest and running cons like that one, you are going to find life will bite you in the **** big time. There is nothing wrong with negotiating hard and getting the best deal you can, but do it honestly.

Oh, as far as pipe wrenches go, very handy tools for grabbing round items or things that you may not have a wrench for. They will scar up whatever they touch. Also handy for rough bending of sheet metal (such as bending a fender that has been pushed in to a tire.

Ridgid makes the best pipe wrenches but your Stanley will serve you well.

Sorry if I came off as a harda$$ but I own a small business and really get annoyed when people try to get over on me. Negotiate hard but always be honest, but I think you see that now.

He didn't have to look closer. He said "5 bucks for the new one" and you put $1 on the counter. So why should he thank you for burning him?

What good are his $4 going to do you when you go to hell for stealing? Stealing and lying are two of the ten commandments. Pretty simple rules to live by, really.

He thought I had the older one. The older one was identical with some scratched up paint. He accepted 1 dollar for the wrench I set in front of him and gave me a reciept. He sold it to me for a buck.

Lucky I didn't got shot? This is Texas, just cause he can open carry in his store doesn't mean he's the only one carrying. He had no legal right to shoot anyone.

I personally changed some tools in a box lot at an auction once. I did it early so everyone had the chance to see (I am usually one of the first people to show up) but felt bad anyway. I won't do it again, even though I see people do it every week. We make mistakes and learn and grow. Give the guy a chance!

Yea deceiving him is questionable, but ultimately it is up to the man behind the counter to do his job and pay attention to what he is selling and for how much. Otherwise he would be out of business rather quickly.

Had it been one of the forum veterans and a Snap-On 1/2 drive master set and it was $1 everybody would be bowing down in worship. Easy to pass judgement when you arn't there. I wouldn't worry what anyone else thought. The pawn shop probably didn't have 25 cents in it.

One of my customers pawned a Gibson Hummingbird and the shop owner wouldn't give him but 100 dollars on pawn.. (knew he was desperate) and the guy gave me the pawn ticket. I got there and they had it out on day 92 of the pawn and had it out for 1400.00. I got out of there with it for 900.00 He totally robbed the guy. happens all the time.

Guys, while I have no love for pawn shops (phone companies or the electric company either), two wrongs don't make a right. Simplespeed felt remorse so cut him some slack. I agree with him, he doesn't need to slit his wrists, just do better next time.

Yeah, the pawn shop should have paid better attention, but to me that is immaterial.

I am a firm believer in what goes around comes around, so if you scam someone, you will get bitten. Same with the sleazy pawn shop owners. You will never get ahead long term screwing people. Play it straight, work hard, save and invest your $'s and you will do just fine.

Every time I have played situations unfairly to my advantage, I won at first but have paid later. Be honest and you will get ahead long term.

Nothing wrong with negotiating for a better price, as long as you are not deceptive.

I buy tools almost everyday and I tell people I'm buying to resell and that there needs to be enough room in there for me to make some money. I also tell them if it doesn't work for them, that's cool. It needs to work for both parties. I have no problem with squeezing the last dollar out of a deal, as long as there is no deception.
