All the recent threads about pawn shops reminded me of a little ditty my x-father in law used to sing...the words were

"meet me in front of the pawn shop, kiss me under the balls"

An obvious reference to the globes that are part of the traditional pawn shop signage.

Every time that I go to a pawn shop hoping to score a bargain, I see some scuffed up, messed up heavily used tool that is listed for sale at 90% of the price you would get a new one for off of the tool truck.

In my younger days I would work Pawn Detail at the local Police Department where I would be responsible for reviewing pawn ticket sales and then processing the sale with the individual responsible for the sale into the local police department data base.

Well, as you can imagine, I would see a pawn ticket that had occurred early in the week and then appear at the pawn shop hoping to get the tool for a song. I'd see a set of Mac wrenches in SAE six point from 1/4" to 1" bought for $40 and expect maybe to bring them home for $100 or so.. but NO. Try $300-ish..

I think that I would rather take my chances on eBay.

This often happens to me too.

Awwww, Yeah. What makes my jaw drop is when I see the item that was bought for say $25 listed for sale at $275.

I know that some people need to make their money some how but gosh.. I was hoping for a garage sale atmosphere, not another version of the tool truck.

True, the deals do not fall in your lap. You generally have to work for the deals by stopping by several shops often. Like I always say, no two pawn shops are alike and everything depends on the attitude/strategy of the manager.

I frequently see them at close-to-new prices. However, I stopped in my local pawn shop the other day and there was a Dewalt 18V cordless set: Drill, recip saw and light, with THREE batteries and a charger, for $179. This weekend Home Depot had a two-tool set with the drill and saw for $179, and two batteries. I don't really care about the light, but the extra battery is making me lean toward the pawn shop. It's a very small town, and the owner has been here forever, so I feel good about them not being stolen.
I've got an 18v Dewalt drill, but one battery is dead as a stone, and the other seems to be on it's way out now, so this would give me two drills (handy for the sheetrock projects I've got coming up), and the saw (JUNKYARDS!) and three good batteries.

I've gotten some Snap-on and other pro-quality odds and ends at pawn shops, but the big score was a 3/4-drive 30-inch long MAC ratchet for $15 about 15 years ago (jeez I've got to stop doing that! It seems like yesterday, but it was that long ago. I'm getting old.) I still have it, and though it doesn't come out of the box often, when it does, something is about to happen.

I see pricing that's all over the map, and it seems like lots of local shops concentrate on DVD's and jewelry, and have very few tools. With dealerships and body shops laying people off, I'm seeing tools and boxes all over CL, I would have expected to see lots of tools in pawn shops too, so far I haven't.

Only pawn shop song I know is:

There's a pawn-shop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
And I walk up and down 'neath the clock
By the pawn shop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
But I ain't got a thing left to hock.

She was peaches, she was honey
And she cost me all my money
'Cause a whirl 'round the town was her dream
Took her dancin', took her dinin'
Till her blue eyes were shinin'
With the sights that they never had seen.

If you should run into a golden haired angel
And ask her tonight for a date
She'll tell you somewhere there's a rich millionaire
Who is calling again about eight.

There's a pawn shop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
And I've just got to get five or ten
From the pawnshop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Gotta be with my angel again.

I take that back - there is another one...

there's a pawn shop on the corner
where i usually keep my overcoat.

there's a bookie
behind the pawnshop
who handles my investments

there's a trading post by the pawnshop
where my sister sells candy

there's a hook shop above the pool hall
where my sister makes her living
she's a good sport i can spring her
for a fin or even a sawbuck
when not holding or the horses
have been running rather slowly

Elroy pays regular visits to one local shop as they typically have several boxes of loose tools. Sure 90% of it is junk and you have to spend some time digging for the gold.

Been going there about once a month for a good couple of years. Well at check out time the manager was always jumping up to check Elroy out. Noticed his prices kept going up. He knew Elroy was a regular and was going to buy.

Well about 6 months ago, Elroy dug through all the **** they had and came up with a hand full of mixed stuff like some Allen wrenches and a nice old ball peen. Maybe 12 items Elroy was thinking could be had for $10. Well ole dip **** manager wanted $30. Elroy counter offer to $12. Store still wanted their $30.

Elroy simply turned around and walked out

Went back several times later and just looked. Made sure the manager saw who was shopping.

About 3 month later, Elroy tried another purchase and ole dip **** had returned to being reasonable.

The moral is: offer low and stand your ground. Be prepared to walk. Elroy could pass on it all.

Gospel hock shop rule there. They at least have to be willing to dicker. None of that drawing a line in the sand **** for me either Elroy, well said! :pimpflash
