I don't know if you all have any experience with pawn shops in pensacola, fl, but they are insane! Most of these places had heavily used air tools (snap on, mac, etc.) for outrageous prices. For example, there was a Mac air angle grinder, beat to all hell, marked $75. They had a set of sunex 1/2" impact sockets that were very used, and they had them marked at $225. (this set http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_1038213_1038213) Is it just this area or are all pawn shops like this? I am on a search for cman RP wrenches, and I found a few, but they wanted like $15 for a 1" and $3 for a 3/8", and they had rust on them. I got a different shop to sell me a 7mm rp and 11/32 rp for a buck total. So, a win there. I was just amazed at the stuff. One place had a harbor freight flux welder, the 90 amp one, marked 100 on the shelf and it was pretty abused. Still had wire in it coming out of the gun. Is it normal for pawn shops to charge dang near retail on beat up stuff?

Some pawn shops are under the illusion that they are really boutique antique shops??

They seem to charge at least MSRP and then 10%. But you do find some good deals if you want to go spend a day looking. I bought my KRL761 in cranberry damn near new for $2000 OTD about 6-7 years ago.

They are like that with firearms also. I always read on some forum someone getting a deal of a lifetime on a rifle but that has never been my experience.

The craftsman RP's are on sale now. $60.00 for the set up to 1 1/8 with some mini-wrenches thrown in.

And the pawn shops here in oklahoma are much like you describe. Any wrenches that are made in the usa are $4-5 a piece. Takes all the fun out of looking at their stuff; can't afford it if I do find anything nice.

It must depend on where you live. I have found some great deals in pawn shops here in Georgia. I just went on a pawn shop run today and found some great deals. I might post some of my finds in a separate thread later.

Do you go to Carsons Pawn on Pace Blvd? Thats about the only one in town that I can get a good deal at. Adams has a lot of tools but the prices can be crazy.

Pawn shops have retarded pricing in my experience. A heavily used set of Snap-On sockets for full retail price? Are these guys high? Guns are even worse, my local pawnshop basically wants new prices for handguns esspecially and they will not allow any disassembly or dry firing. Who is going to pay $500 for a used Glock 26 when they can't even do a field strip to inspect it?

New pawn shop opened up in town less than a year ago. Their inventory has gradually grown to where they almost need a bigger place. Although its because nothing ever sells. Used pair of downhill skis from 1980. $100. Used Craftsman halogen light set on stand on sale for $99. Taiwan and china wrenches, your choice $5. The list goes on

I was just down at the Army/Navy Pawn Shop in Foley Alabama at the beginning of the month. Went in looking for some directions and walked out with a flat of tools (all USA) and MAC 3/4" drive 200-600 ft-lb Torque Wrench. All for $250. Not an incredible deal but I can use everything I bought right now. Oh and I was only 30 miles from Pensacola down HWY 98.

In my experience pawn shops in smaller towns and cities are better places to find deals. I used to find some deals where I used to live...but now living in a larger city I don't find squat. I don't even bother to go in anymore... :(

I remember walking into a pawn shop when I was about 16 years old looking to buy a surfboard, they wanted more for a beat up board than I could pay for a new one. Haven't been back in a pawn shop in 14 years

Pawn shops in my area are normally pretty bad on tool pricing. Guns OTOH are halfway decent unless you are looking for something on the high end scale, then you pay top dollar. I scored an old Sears and Roebuck 12 ga. pump a couple years ago for $80. It's not the prettiest thing in the world but it fires reliably and is a danged good squirrel/ varmet gun.

Pawn shops, unlike most retails establishments, do have the ability to haggle.

This might explain ridiculous pricing in some stores.

That said, I typically don't spend much time in the stores with ridiculous pricing. I'd rather waste my time somewhere that doesn't try to hose the walk-ins.

I have been in a lot of pawn shops, and agree that most often the prices are stupid high. I did get a killer deal once, however. A pair of fishing rods with electric reels on them. These are big buck items, and I got them super cheap. Took them home, cleaned them up, took the reels off the rods and put everything on ebay. Tripled my money in a week.

I think the key to this deal was that the pawn shop was nowhere near the coast. Who would go in there looking for deep sea fishing stuff?
