Pawnshop tool deals?

Do you guys ever find deal and tools when you go to pawn shops my pawn shops in the area are a franchise brand called pawn america there tools are very expensive never deals to be had. They are selling right now a harbor fright black chest that sells for $150 for $500 insane i wanted to call them out on it trying to scam somebody on it it was so beat up wasn't work $50. They also had a stamped signed football with the fake autos for $250 trying to pass it off as real that really pissed me off do these employees now what there doing or are they this clueless?

Very seldom do I find any deals at the pawnshop. Mostly beat to **** tools for almost full retail new prices.

Yes most of my tools come from pawn shops. I have better luck at the mom and pop stores around here. But when I go to Oklahoma City the best deals are in the chains. Especially cash America pawn which is ironic lol

If you wait and watch there are deals; I bought two Matco boxes for 750$ each there. They were cherry too.
A Matco version of a stant radiator tester for 55$.
Just have to wait and watch.

I think it is just hit or miss. The pawn shops in my town ****. Always junk tools, always insane prices. Some people's pawn shops rock.

Pawn shop here are hit and miss, but you learn the one's to avoid, and I still find it funny the thing's they put as high value item's. most of them know Snap on is King but take Mac, Matco, and cornwell, proto and you can get really good deals on

Ugh. No. One guy sells NIB Craftsman power tools for MORE than retail, he has some precise formula worked out and apparently makes money at it. The other place, last time I went in there, the guy was proudly showing off what had been a swivel jaw vise that he had "fixed" with his welder. It's fixed alright. This establishment specializes in filthy mattresses and box springs, btw.

I'd love to see one of the pawn shops some of you guys enjoy.

Buy most of my stuff at pawnshops too. Deals range from ok to great. Not much in the you **** range, but decent stuff. It is true about snap on vs the other good brands. I got a MAC 12 mm wrench for 50 cents one day. Just before I was going to work on my truck and the 12mm 12 point is what I needed for the drive shaft.

You usually have to dig through to find the good deals. But you can find OK deals if you just keep your eye open. My cherry picker was 200 dollars roughly. But it was made in the USA and had thicker walled tubing than the ac delco or harbor freight ones that are so common. My drill press was I want to say 175 or so before tax. Big old delta with the multi speed pulleys up top. Not a great deal, but still better than the chinese stuff. Chop saw was 39 dollars, again not great, but it was hardly used before I got it. Those are just some of the OK deals I have found at pawn shops.

I try not to spend more than $10 at a time in a pawn shop, even then I'm expecting to walk out with 5-10 Made in U.S.A. hand tools or I leave them behind...

I'd never buy a battery operated tool there, I have looked for corded tools but they always seem to be priced 80% or more of new cost.

I remember when back when I worked retail I'd see people come in looking for parts for items they purchased at pawn shops on occasion, I'd always ask what they paid 99% of the time they payed 90-110%+ of the price they could have purchased new from our store for.

Insane the way they work; I get the point on how they make their money on the high interest they charge; and then to add more insult they charge outrageous high rates for used tools.

We have one guy with a used snap-on impact hammer and would not come down one penny on his asking price. Every month for one full year he would place the same ad on cl, it took him one full year before someone bought that air tool for his asking price. He will not ever come down in his asking prices, I guess he makes so much in high interest he does not care how long he sits with the used tools.

There is one here in town literally less than a thousand feet from HF selling HF items at higher than retail.
There are a couple you can do alright at, you just have to know what you are buying. Also, usually don't get a good deal unless you can negotiate.

The truck brands are like 2% under retail regardless of model or condition, so they usually end up staying there a LONG time.

I luck out as there is a pawn shop, two auction houses, and Hamilton tool all in beaver falls, pa where I work. I score the best deals at the pawn shops and auction houses.

I picked up a complete set of snap on ratcheting std wrenches at the pawn shop for 40$

At the auction house downtown I get snap on tools all the time for HF prices. Bought two complete snap on bagged wrench sets for 40$, two 1/8 drive sets for 5$ each, extractor set for 5$, and a brand new never used craftsman V tool set for 40$

Same here, I got a proto 8in clik stop and a cherry sk 45170 for $2.50 each last week.

I've had very hit or miss luck. I once picked up a 3 drawer c-man box packed full of c-man sockets. Both standard and deepwell.....all for $80. Other times I can't get out fast enough because the prices are just as high as brand new retail.

there are approx 10 pawn shops within a 20 mile radius of my house.
a couple of them are chain stores, and a few independents.

one of the indy places aint bad, i've found a lot of industrial brand stuff in the $1 bins, most everything else they have is @ 75-90% of retail.
2 of a chain stores are about the same,
the rest i dont even bother going in anymore, very few tools, and what they have is at or above retail prices...

There are 10-12 pawn shops I frequent, several on a weekly basis. All are chain stores. I normally spend $20-100 a week. Most of the good stuff I flip on Ebay, the Chinese stuff I sell on Craigslist.

Pawn shopping has become something of an addiction. My goal for the new year is to quit buying until I get the pile in my garage cleaned out.

I was asked to leave a pawn shop once lol, there was a guy interested in buying a very used Glock 23, which brand new go for about $550 +/-. The shop wanted $1100. Pawn guy left to answer the phone so I walked over to the customer and explained to him whT he was looking at and that he could go down the street and buy a brand new one for 1/2 of what the pawn shop was asking. Shop owner was not happy when the customer declined the sale

Yup just like what my pawn shop is doing with the harbor freight box that retails for $150 selling it for $500. I am guessing it is the employees just randomly marking prices not even bothering to look up the retail price or they are just trying to scam people.

I was blown away at the prices they ask for certain items. One thing I did notice, the price on the tags are usually 3x more than what they really want for the item. The shotgun I bought was priced at $325, I asked what he would take, he said $100+ tax. I figured it was some kind of insurance scam type thing, they get robbed or burgularized they claim the asking price on the item.

the only one I ever went in to used ebay for offers and pricing. Find the lowest listed or sold price for what your trying to sell them. They would offer 20%. Then they would turn around and find the highest selling price and add 20%. There must be a lot of crack heads around them. Only saw a few matco tools air tools well used at full price on the shelf and HF junk when I looked threw the bucket of hand tools.

I get Husky, SK, Proto, etc... tool for next to nothing. Sometimes even for nothing!

Rule of thumb, if it's in the glass cases, it's priced too high. If it's in a bucket with loads of junk, you might get a good deal.

This weekend I found a 1 1/4 Husky socket (made in USA!) in a bucket of ****. They had 3 more that were from China. I showed them to the guy all at once and asked how much for one. HE just gave it to me for free. Too much trouble to ring up I guess.

Have had a couple of decent transactions with pawn shops.

First one had a set of 3/4" drive sockets, they said made in USA and had part #'s on them, but no brand name. Turned out to be Cat made by Snap On. Asked if they would take $100 out the door. They accepted and I left with them. Of course I knew what they were.

Second had a Snap On 1 and 1/2" Drive with a 3 and 1/2" socket on it. Thing was huge. The socket alone was retail over $400. The ratchet and handle Retailed over $600. They were asking $300 for it and again I offered $100. They accepted and I left with the package. I eventually sold it on Ebay. But should have kept it.

There's a reason, but it's not an insurance scam.

Imagine you're a dirtbag with ****** credit. You lost, sold you tools and need more to get some work to pay for your addiction, gambling debt, or whatever.

Home Dept isn't going to give you credit, nor is any other tool chain. But a pawn shop will. You're at their mercy. All you care about is walking out with tools and a monthly payment you can afford. The price is irrelevant. Getting credit is everything!

The pawn shop jacks up the price so that once you make the down payment and 1st month, they've got their investment back. Any payments you make are usually pure profit.

There are quite a few in my area. Some I go to on almost weekly others once a month or so. I like the selection at the mom a pops but the chain stores are were I have gotten my better deals. With these store I have found you don't bring them 1 item out of the loose tools bin, bring them 5-10$ worth (my idea of what their worth) an then you will get a good deal. I keep what I wanted from that pile and ebay or garage sale the rest. The ones I like best are the ones that sell the boxes full of tools for 20-50$.

I also will not by a cordless tool, corded tools in good brands only, I also love pawn shop chain saw deals. Most all of my tools and my tool boxes were bought at pawn shops

i buy a ton of tools at pawn shops. with that being said first thing is first SAVE RECEIPTS for proof of a legal purchase. there are 3 pawn shops i frequent the first is an old mom and pop place. it is the best and the absolute worst. all that means is i have to check it out once every few weeks. i have purchased a 41" +/- top craftsman ball bearing grip latch box FULL of craftsman, Snap on, mac,s-k and Matco. for $325.

i have also walked into the same place and seen a snap on 1/4 drive socket/ratchet set missing 1/3 of the pieces for 400 dollars. i will ask them about it and they will say "oh yeah thats i nice set price is firm". to that i respond very immaturely stupid childish comment. i think of it as fighting fire with fire.

btw this is also the place i bought a brand new in the box with papers and sealed snap on 1/2 composite impact gun for 100 dollars

i also purchased a brand new in the box sealed snap on hit hammer set (in box with gun and three chisels) for $75. i have had many good deals but if i go in there 12 times in a year i will only get 2 good deals but there more like amazing lifetime deals. so is it worth it ? to me yes.

the other two pawn shops i go to i can seam to fine a good deal 30% of the time but i frequent those two weekly.

i have purchased a snap on roll cart with two drawers (next to each other) and lip with original key for 75 dollars in really nice shape for the age.

the thing i have found with pawn shops in my area (western, md) is they ask for 1/2 the price the item cost new but at the same time they want to double there money so they invest roughly 1/4 the price as new (most of the time less) and i make it a point to never pay more then half the price as new if the item is in good shape. the worse the shape the lower the price of corse.

i have seen items put out for sale at pawn shops such as a long 1/2 snap on dual 80 soft grip flex head for 200. i ask them there best price the say 175 i pass. few days later i ask the same they say 150 i pass. third time i go in the guy says "hey i still got that ratchet i offer him 50 and walk out with it for 75. its a game and i love to play.

i paid $700

snap on tool chest (small don't remember the model, three 1/3 drawers, 2 normal doors lid closes over drawers like normal) paid 25 bought a 20 dollar emblem it was missing off ebay (it was not the correct emblem for the age) and resold it to the pawn shop i bought it from for $200

last but not least the top craftsman box i mentioned above. i paid 325 and when i say it was packed it was PACKED. i removed all the craftsman and s-k tools and sold them to another pawn shop for 200 dollars. i then sold the box to a buddy for 50 bucks and sold the matco tools to a coworker for 200 and he was extremely happy with the price. i was left with a bunch of snap on and mac sockets, pliers, screw drivers, ect.

take your time and just look. oh and the second thing Never Pay the sticker price. i don't care if it just came out. they can always come down.

They make most of thier money on pawned items. If they arent buying stuff outright or people arent letting pawned items go the they can keep the prices high to keep the store full and thier margins up.

I forgot to add. WALK AWAY if the deal isn't what you want. If you come to the places often and they know your face, the walk away is your power. Its true they make their money on interest but most still want to move the inventory

I buy almost all my used tools from a pawn shop and have never had a problem with finding fair prices I just make sure to stay away from high dollar items with engravings.

I also hit the pawn shops once a week looking for tools. Most of them ask way to much others its hit and miss. I can go to one cash america find a snap on 3/8 deep impact set 8-24mm with magnet rail that looked brand new for 90 walked out paying 70 which I was happy with seeing how its a 240 dollar set. I can drive 5 miles to another cash america and all they have is junk that there asking full retail for. It blows my mind but I guess they figure most people will pay the prices cause they can make payments on things

That's what I have found here. One old guy is still asking $5 for DVDs when everyone else is getting $1-2. Sometimes they don't really seem interested in moving inventory.

The best pawn shop deals I've had, are from those that are not chains and are mom and pop places.

It's hit and miss, but whenever I'm in Reno for business, I always stop in a my favorite haunts. I end up with a bunch of stuff to UPS home and I'm always happy.
