When I was fresh out of high school I landed a job as a plumber's apprentice and I started I met some really great guys that were doing well in there careers. As they would assign a task to me I didn't always have the tools needed to do what they asked. Every once in a while some journey man would say "Here take this tool I've got a new one so you keep this one so you can save a little money kid." And I was very greatful for there generosity. Fast forward 25-30 years and working as a firefighter now I run across rookies that are just getting started themselves, or purchasing a new house and spent everything they have to just get moved in. I'm finding myself doing the same thing that those journey man did for me.
Most of us already do this and don't even realize it. So here's the challenge. If you upgrade a tool and the old one is still good, pass it along to a guy that could put it to good use to get them started. Or if you have some materials left over and it could help someone out. If your a little tight on the funds give a little bit of your time to finish a project and share your skills. And then post it here. Not to be braggadocios but to give a nudge to someone who the thought didn't cross there mind yet. I'm curious to see how many younger men we can get to put the video game controller down and get out into the garage/shop!

At my last job, I was a mentor for students in the tool maker apprentice program. When they graduated, I would give them one of my tools. After working together for four years, it was easy to pick something appropriate. I'm going to retire soon, and plan to give my work tool box to a young guy who really could use it. He needs a tool box, and money's tight for him right now. I might give him a few other tools, too. Great idea!

Good thread!

I do the same here. I just did it with my friends son. He showed an interest in fixing vehicles, so I set him up with a basic box and tool setup. Plenty to work on his bike, and he can add to it as he gets older (he is 12) and tool needs increase.

I have a box here still of tools that are extra/give away/loaner. If another youngin shows interest, I can build them a box as well. Partially why I buy cheap used quality tools when I can.

Come to think of it, I have like 5 complete sets of tools.... ouch....

This morning I gave my old toolbox to my buddy Duese. He remodeled a bed room for his special needs son he had all his tools in a pile in the corner of his garage.
