Hello,

Just looking for anyone with experience on paying for a SO box.

I'm across the pond in the UK so things may be different for you guys stateside.

Essentially my SO dealer has a 40" Heritage series box on promo, it's 2820 pounds inc the tax which is about 1000 less than the normal price.

He's offering it with a weekly payment at 12% interest.

I have a cheapo box to trade in against it which he tells me I'll get 400 for.

I could pay for it cash outright, but if doing so should i expect a discount etc ?

Most snap on dealers here in the states do not give discounts for purchasing with cash. That is because Snap on financing is the one that gives the rebates. Most default intrest here is around 18% sometimes you can get 9.
Im about to purchase one but using my bank for a lower intrest rate.
If you can buy it out right I would pay a couple payments for credit wise and then pay it off

Hope it helps!

It never hurts to try and negotiate a cash discount, but that 12% rate would be more than enough incentive for me to pay with greenbacks.

I disagree with not giving cash discounts, with the caveat that it applies when using your truck (financed through the driver personally) account, not through Snap On Credit. Toolboxes of course often have better deals that require using SOC to get, but then you can pay it off fast to avoid interest. I wouldn't buy much if anything from a driver who wouldn't give me a discount for cash up front. They have a ton of markup, and that includes what is essentially interest for the time value of their money and the risk involved in loaning money... if I take those out of the equation paying cash, I expect to be compensated with a lower price. If I have to borrow, I understand I'm going to pay more than I might elsewhere.

I got my driver to finance me about $1500 on a KRL722 (total price $2700) by putting the rest down and paying quickly. I guess it's more like layaway, I'll probably have it about paid for by the time he drops it off.

weekly payments at 12% is compounded interest.
12% interest divide over the entire year is less than compounded. The 12% he is offering you is a much higher rate of interest.

Yes many people pay 18% interest on their credit cards. If you have band credit that is what you will pay or more. I have a credit union credit card and my charge is 8% but I pay it off every month. I have other ones for travel but I also pay them off when the bill comes.

My wife is from Australia and the interest rate I have been getting on my money there has been 4 to 6 times what our banks will pay. I am thinking that the UK charges are about the same as Australia.

I would go to a bank and see what kind of loan I could get if I were you.
My advice is not to buy it new or pay that much for a box. The interest he is charging might be more than the discount he gave you. Then again if his sales are slow it might be a way to get you to bite so he can make a sale. I would rather have a sale where the interest would make up the discount. The seller makes money and ends up getting full price or more and if you don't pay he can repossess the box.

Buy used and pay cash. Buy a much cheaper box for cash and save until you can afford a better one. You will be so much money ahead and you can put the money you save into your retirement funds.

I have been saving  Been saving for 3 years. My cheapo box is now at bursting point and needs replaced with something bigger.

I wonder then if i pay cash if i won't get it at the promo price ? As in its that price only if paid with snap on credit etc. Bit of a shame if that's the way they work.

If you use Snap-On credit, they do a credit check. 8-18%. Through the truck account, depends what deal you can work out with the driver.

Sometimes there are big rebates through Snap-On credit. I just priced a Modis for a friend, through my guy. The Snap-On credit had to be used in order to get a $1200 rebate. Which also meant that the tax had to be covered. No tax then no rebate. The difference was $900+ better with the rebate and paying the tax.

Now if the Snap-On credit account was payed within 90 days, there would be no credit charge (0%), and still have the rebate. This was the best option. I hope this helps someone.

If you use Snap-On credit, you may be able to get a rebate. There are times where the rebate is increased more than usual as a promotion as well. I suggest contacting your seller.

I think 2820 pounds is about 4700 U S dollars. On the Snapon U S site, the box is 2035 dollars. I would expect a discount from that. Seems like a lot of tax over there

Here's how I did it last year.
Told my SO dealer exactly what I wanted. Told him I wanted a tool show deal. Told him I wanted to pay cash. Dealer says we'll finance to get the rebates and he'll figure out exact numbers when the show happens. Gives me a ballpark figure thousands of dollars more than what I actually paid. He knew what box I had so no need to evaluate trade, we both know what it trades for. Handshake. Did some paperwork to get pre-approved by SO credit. Dealer texts me a picture from the show, tells me he bought my box and it'll be there in October. Dealer comes back from the show, we start final deal paperwork. He shows me options in Epiq just in case I'd changed my mind. He gets me in with a show discount, free stainless top, double rebate and double trade. Another handshake. One check for his wife. Four weeks later my box is there. Another check, another handshake. He has freebies for me in it too. Delivered ahead of schedule, under budget.

Go to Costco and spend £299 on one of these:

and then put the £2500 left into some tools.

SO boxes are a bit overpriced all things considered.

Tax is about 20% not including any taxes imposed on Snap-On for importing and offering their products for sale. Not sure if the OP has a way to offset VAT later due to it being for work.

Its very common for US companies to simply do a 1:1 copy of the price for goods sold in Europe regardless of the exchange rate.

The box i'm looking at is $2390 just for the roll cab. The top box is an additional $1725

I don't know how you got that price of $2035

I already have a cheap box, filled with about £8K worth of tools. The whole buy a cheapo does not interest me. I've done that for years, now i want a SO box.

The price of £2350 + Tax still applies, i will get the tax back though in April through my tax claims so that's some £470 i will recover.

Think i may go with the weekly payments with the interest to get the good deal and then just pay it off in a few weeks to negate the interest.

He was guessing it was a KRA4107 which is $2035. You also didn't mention specifically that it was a cabinet and top box combo (although one could come to that conclusion via the weight) which obviously makes the conversion pricing more realistic.

I can tell you how it works in the states; or at least my experience.

The "Rock n' Roll" truck comes around 2-4 times a year with my regular driver. He just follows him on his regular route. I assume he has an area and goes around with a different driver every week, but I could be mistaken.

When the "Rock n' Roll" truck comes around they are doing promotional offers on tool boxes. The "Rock n' Roll" truck just has new boxes on it; no other tools. It's just a rollin show room for Snap-on tool boxes.

I stepped on one last week and they were offering a "rebate" on some boxes and "double rebates" on other boxes. They also offered me a "preferred customer discount". Guess for paying regular and one time? It was a $1,500USD discount.

The "rebate" is applied at the time of your sale/contract. I believe it is only available when you go through Snap-on Credit.

A $600 "rebate" was applied to my box (bought this week), but I bought a mothball box that had been on the dealers truck 2 years. Can't remember the amount of the rebate on the KRL's and Epiq's on the Rock n' Roll truck. It was $600 or more.

That's exactly what I guessed at. I didn't see any mention of weight though

Ah i see, so essentially it's just a discount applied at the point of sale on the box.

I've been stepping on the Snap on trucks for years and have never seen anything like that. It might be a stateside thing only i guess.

Typically the promo here will be £1000 off the retail price with either a fixed minimum trade in for an old box, say 400-500 or slightly more off the retail price with a lower trade in value on an old box.

I wonder if i could get a preferred customer rate. I've bought £8k worth of tools in 4 years all paid off.

This is a Facebook page from Australia showing the Rock n' Roll truck. Couldn't find much on UK searches. Not sure if you guys have the "Rock n' Roll" truck or not.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Snap-on-Tools-Hornsby/388730811216467

Scroll down just a bit and you will see the post.

In the end, I would definitely haggle with the driver. Just keep at him, especially since you are a good customer, and see what other discounts he can offer.
