PB Swiss serial number duplication?

I was under the impression that the numbers etched into PB Swiss tools were globally unique serial numbers, but I recently got two tools that share the exact same number. Is that supposed to happen?

You're looking at the part numbers (8126.9 and 8125.9). The serial numbers are both 226387.

No idea about the SN's but those "coin drivers" are very cool

only six digits ... but those were probably made in the same batch...maybe a computer glitch? the oem production video shows the lazer engraving is all automated.

presumably they are sourced from legit channels? maybe ping the sales rep.

It is to trace the batch of steel from which they we're made and so on.

Ha! Yeah, the reason this caught my attention is because a week or so ago I was trying to remove the brush plugs on my old Porter Cable circular saw and the plastic covers had the "coin" type slots. I tried with a coin but couldn't get enough leverage to remove them and I ended up buggering up the slots using a wide screwdriver instead.

A tool like this would have come in handy, although $19 for something I would hardly ever use, well....

You have different part numbers, so you could have the same serial number. I'd be more interested in the probability of that happening.

I just saw the same model listed on ebay, and guess what? Same serial! I'm sure it must refer to a batch of steel or something similar.

The real name for the "coin driver" is Dzus fastener screwdriver. They are commonly used in aviation and auto racing. Snap-on sells two different ones and I have also seen them at auto parts resellers. Snap-on part numbers are S6180 and S6189.

As for the PB Swiss serial numbers, the PB Swiss database goes back to 1992. It appears the serial number is provided to trace back production stages, raw materials and quality control.
