In 1970, IBEW LU#26 - Nations Capital...large conductors enclosed in wire pulling baskets (these had a wire basket that worked a lot like oriental finger cuffs and tightened when pulled), were often called peckerheads for resembling anatomy. Especially once they were assembled, taped and slathered in pulling compound (a metric ton of names for that as well...) and hooked to a backhoe, this was before pulling winches were developed.

I doubt if that is the correct story. I would think its called the peckerhead more for what is inside. If you dont have a terminal block you place uninsulated ring terminals on the wires and #8 bolts/nuts to join them(larger motors use split bolts). Then you wrap with cambric tape, upside down splicing tape, and then electrical tape. After you do this you have 3 peckerhead looking objects in the box.

And wire nuts in the peckerhead are illegal

(att humm) We were told that "pecker-head" came from its general shape in "comparison" to something found in nature. :Twitch::rolleyes:
For a while here, we were not allowed to use the term. Tell that to a bunch of 25 year plus guys and guess the outcome :dunno:

Hasn’t Congress designated some week “National Peckerhead Week”?
We get the chance to recognize and thank all the peckers and peckerheads in our lives.
And some state ... not sure but maybe more than one has peckerhead for the state bird.
If you can read this thank a peckerhead.
