Pedestal Grinder Tool Rest rebuild

Just got a vintage Cincinnati 104, 12x2 pedestal grinder. Picked up for $60. It's a 3 phase, 2hp motor which I am currently hooking up to a Teco FM50 vfd.

Both tool rest/tables are out of square and badly worn. I want to rebuild them using 1/2", 5x3 L angle, which closely is the dimensions of the ones there.

The ones currently are 1-1/2" deep by 4" wide. I was interested in fabricating new ones that wrap a bit on either side of the wheel by 1". Similar in design to my Baldor 6" grinder. On occasions I do use the side of the wheel to touch up, not heavy grinding. Also would like to make it deeper in front of the wheel from 1-1/2" to maybe 3".

Any opinions, pros and cons to a tool rest/table straight across versus a wrap around on such a larger grinder. Thanks - David

You may want to ask over at www.owwm.org - those guys really know their stuff (not that we don't here) when it comes to vintage power tool equipment.

Sweet grinder!

Provided they're not interfering with the wheels, it matters not which design you make them. Still wouldn't use the sides of the wheels though. :D Get yourself a cup wheel or whetstone for stuff like that.

David: again nice find on that nice old grinder and the VFD is worth more than you paid for it. i second not using the side of the grinding wheels for any grinding. google grinding wheels exploding and you'll get a good idea why if you hadn't already heard of this issue.

do you want to make the new tool rests or would you rather see if you can order them from the manufacturer? i'm pretty sure they are still in business so might be worth a call or email to see what they have that might work.

good luck

I forgot about OWWM, I will post there.

I'm aware of exploding wheels due to internal fractures. Would never use the side to grind. On rare occasions have flatten the bottom side of a chisel or similar tool on the side using the wrap around tool rest on the 6" Baldor grinder.

I've seen only one photo only of another vintage Cincinnati and other newer grinders that have the wrap around tool rest. So was wondering what purpose does this design serve.
