Some years back in Leningrad, I saw a maintenance guy using some chisels made from leaf springs of Studebaker trucks sent to Stalin under the WWII Lend/Lease program. Joe missed a few payments, so maybe we should repo those Studes.

thnx, jack vines

You really need to get out more otherwise, you might find yourself going into garage bays on the pretense of getting free air just to see what kind of tools the techs are using.

I was more intrigued by the "tools" used for the rope access. (Rope rescue technician for 16 of my 23 years as a firefighter.) Cool pix. Thanks.

I always notice when I walk into another shop.. and I am always looking at what our techs are using when I'm out in the shop. I find myself scanning magazine photos (think double page spread opening shop inside a shop, etc) for what they've got stacked in the corners, etc. Hahaha.. sickness!

No problem. I have a high resolution pics if you're interested.

There's also one more of a bridge worker spray washing something off the bridge.

Yep I always look at what guys that do certain jobs all the time are using. I also look to see how guys do certain jobs as well. You find some cool tools (10" spud crescent comes to mind), how they do certain things (building eletrical boxes and aligning conveyor belts come to mind), and tips and tricks to do certain tasks (I learn a lot of these in peoples help me with XYZ problem threads here).

I always try to notice the tools I see on TV programs.
I was watching King of Queens and there is a Snappy master series box in the garage. I watch this show called "wheeler Dealer" on the BBC and I'm always pausing it to see what Ed China is using to fix cars since they are in the UK. I've seen Snappy sockets on unknown ratchets.
I noticed on West Coast Customs Berlin they have Ranger boxes but haven't noticed the hand tools.
Does that count?
I'm sure I could think up more examples.

TV shows and movies are something else entirely! A while back I was thrilled that I found a Proto wrench in a video game.

Okay well today I went to an old Dodge dealer where I got my start as a tech washing cars and was looking at all the toolboxes as I walked through the shop. I was surprised at the HF boxes and C-man boxes in there. When I first started working there it was all Snappy and Mac. I did see an older Snappy box that had a built in locker on the left side (not an added locker) and drawers on the right. It was pretty cool.
I was just thinking one day when I was working there a guy bought a new torque wrench from the SO truck and threw a Thorsen beam type into the trash. Being a scavenger I plucked it out and inspected it. I asked the guy why he tossed it and he said he got a new click type and showed it to me. He said keep it if you want it so I did. Still have it! Using it a couple times working at Honda when the manual called for beam only. Sorry I got off topic!

Doesn't everyone look? I look to see what people use, then when I get close to needing/buying it, I ask them why this over that, and any other questions I can think of. Then I also review my online sites such as this and look for reviews.

That is also how to find specialty, make your life easier tools.

Hmm.. looks like the Millenium Bridge over the Thames..

And yeah, i do the same thing and look at what tools people are using.

Not quite. It took me a few minutes to verify the ID, but it's the Jubilee Bridge. Maybe? But definitely not the Millenium.

We were in Versailles, France in 1998, and as I looked out the bus window we passed a service station with a whole pegboard full of what I assumed was Facom Tools, lots of red and chrome. I didn't act fast enough for a pic.

A lot of the DIY shows have major sponsorship deals with the tool makers. Pretty much all the SPIKE channel shows are all Macto. Orange County Choppers used to use all Snap-on, but I think Craftsman made them a better offer.

I love that Wheeler Dealer show, by the way. It's kind of funny that they almost never make money on fixing up the cars they buy and sell...but I guess that's where the reality in "Reality TV" comes from. It is almost impossible to ever get the money back that you put into repairs on an old car. But they consistanly end up with nice results.

Yeah I enjoy the show as well. I wish I could see what's in Ed China's toolbox. They never show the tools.

On TV...Wuerth, Snap-On and often Dewalt...I guess, that Dewalt make more product placement...on tv I see often how the camera shows a dewalt drill driver for 10 sec. ...brand new....

Sure. I'd like to see it. You can PM it to me if you want. I've trained with guys from all around the US (Dallas/Ft Worth to Oregon to FDNY) and even "down under". Always interested in seeing how other people do things, in this case across the pond. Thanks.
