Peg board choices

50 years ago I did my first and only peg board project. Bought some 4'x8' sheets of (I am guessing MDF ). It was hard, durable and took a beating loaded with all kinds of hooks and worked well for the 30 years I lived there.

Its time for peg board in my new garage and when I go to Home Depot to get peg board the stuff they have falls apart in the store. Nothing like what I bought years ago.

What am I missing? Metal looks somewhat pricy but might be a good choice. I need the equivalent of 3 4x8 sheets of coverage.. What do I need to search for to order sight unseen online with Lowes, Homedepot or where ever?

Your old PB was probably 1/4" and the thickest now at Home Depot/Lowes is 3/16" as I recall. I'm in the same boat as you. I don't know where to go unless it's a specialty lumber yard?

If you find the 1/4" post it.

I can't comment on the big box vs local lumber yard question, that's a personal call. I will say that if you ask at the Contractor Desk at HD or Lowes, you'll be amazed at the things they can order. Expect most "associates" in the store to be clueless, but eventually you'll get to someone who knows how to order exactly what you want. I got 36" trusses ordered and delivered from HD at an excellent price, for example.

Thanks all. I intuitively felt the situation is as described. But it is sure easier to pursue something when you are confident of the lay of the land. Didn't see anything on their websites.

BTY is that stuff MDF or is there anything other I need to be specific about other than 1/4" thick

The pegboard I have is Masonite (tempered hardboard) not MDF--but I haven't bought any for maybe 15 years. I'm going to have to check it out the next time I am at a lumber yard or Menards.

My pegboard is 1/4” that I purchased from an office supply store that failed 30 years ago. The biggest problem was finding the heavy duty hooks for the thicker panels.

If you want any special orders from a big box store, your best bet is to go directly to the Pro Desk. Having worked at both stores myself, the sales floor employees are usually too busy running around moving pallets and doing stupid tasks to even know what items could be special ordered in their department, let alone the rest of the store (I never knew). Meanwhile, the Pro Desk guys spent their day on the computer looking up items.

To get the good stuff, you need to pursue commercial suppliers.
A few years ago, I purchased 1/4" nominal pegboard from Panel Processing (panel.com). Several options are available...size/hole sizes/spacing/painted colors. I had ordered 5x10 ft sheets in bright white. These panels plus some plastic H-channel from Outwater Plastics made for easy job of floor to ceiling coverage.

I special ordered 1/4 " white pegboard from Home Depot in 2' by 4' pieces. There is also some white plastic pegboard available in 2' by 4' pieces too, I got one sheet from Lowes a number of years ago, and several more pieces from a local person on Craigslist, which can be hit or miss.

One needs the 1/4 " fixtures for it.

Yes, pegboard is masonite hardboard.

If one is careful, one can support it with 3/4 " or 5/8 " wide strips behind it that don't cover any holes. I suggest every 12 inches on center, as well as perimeter support. It will sag if not supported well.

OOPs I was just assuming peg board hooks are peg board hooks. So just going to the store and getting some hooks might result in stuff that fits 3/8” board.

And I suppose now that the metal board hooks would be different also. I will investigate hook supply before getting the board. Thanks

Properly supported with furring strips and fender washered screws what 3/16" white pegboard will hold not to mention the neat appearance and ease of finding the items you hang there.

This. I put up 3/16” pegboard in the garage with furring strips, finish washers, and finished off with some moulding where I had to go around a corner. I have it loaded up. No problem with holding the weight or with hooks tearing out, even with holding heavier loads such as power tools.

I'm often torn on my Pegboard..... At times I feel it is cluttered and I want to yank it all down.... then other times I love having it. It's mounted with 3/4" thick furring strips with intermittent small 3/4" pieces throughout to give the middle of the sheets a little bit of rigidity. Just 1/8 or 3/16 thickness I'm not sure which painted flat black with a foam roller. Does the job just fine.
