I know there are more than one thickness of pegboard out there. Are the holes bigger in the thicker peg board ? I don't want to buy the wrong kind.

I will be hanging mostly hand tools above the work bench which are light like hammers and combination wrenches.

I also want to hang shovels, my sledge hammer, and coiled up extension cords - heavier stuff....which I think I will put hooks into a 2x4 that I will tap-con into the block wall.....

Any cram course on peg board and hooks is appreciated !

In my area, the big box stores carry 1/4" thick pegboard in 4' x 8" dimension. It also comes finished white and unfinished brown. The holes in that size are 1/4" and will hold the type of items you listed. There is another style peg board which is 1/8" thick and has smaller holes 1/8" , but in my opinion that would not be the appropriate style/size for your garage.

thanks 38 Dodge ! I have 1/4 inch diameter holes. I found that ULine catalog or web site has quite an assortment of hooks and things for those holes.

Around here, pegboard is commonly mislabeled as 1/4" when in fact it is not that thick, nor are the holes that size. Use a 1/4" drill bit and use that to check the hole size and thickness of the panels you want. Smaller is not what you want IMHO.

Multi size pegboard hooks are notorious for falling out as the tool is removed. I suggest buying true 1/4" pegboard and the hooks made only for that size. Talon hooks come to mind, but have limited types of hooks.

I've had the best luck going to a local hardware store, they sell me the ones they use to hang all their tools. I've also found them on Amazon by searching for "Industrial" peg board hooks. The ones that point out "1/4 inch wire".

I hate my peg board for this reason. the hooks always fall off behind the workbench.

You and thousands of other people.

True 1/4" pegboard can be ordered online that is cut down to maybe 24 by 48 inches, I forget! Try the talon brand of hook made from engineering plastic (nylon) I am told. Their hooks cost more, but I don't think you will throw them away in disgust. I use them, but they don't make every type of hook I would like, so it will always be a mixed bag.

when I read Garage Journal and found out about socket organizers, I put all my sockets on one and now it hangs on a hook on my main board, and I can easily take it with me.

I just ordered the Presa PS41002-25PK Metal Peg Board Shelving Hooks from amazon last month. I was very impressed with the quality for the price They are true 1/4" and seem very stout. I will get around to ordering the 6" ones soon. Can't post the URL yet but they are easy to find on amazon.

No, *usually* the holes are the same size

What you should look for is 1/4" TEMPERED pegboard. 'Tempered' mean linseed oil was applied under heat which makes it more durable

I have used pegboard for years without problems. I use the little plastic clips that to keep the hooks attached to the board. Also, I use the appropriate hooks

I bought some pegboard hooks at Home Depot last month in a "kit".
They were the 1/4" inch, fit nicely in the 1/4" pegboard I mounted - after painting it grey - faux metal ;-) - AND.. the kit came with these nifty plastic clips that snap into the adjoining holes to keep them from falling out. That's why I gave the kit a try. To see if these work. It does limit the type or hook you can use, but these are the cats meow.

Can't post a link as I'm a lurker /newbie but search for locking pegboard clips
EDIT: I was beat by GIT. Those are the pieces.

I ordered for Uline today the angled hooks and 5/8 inch hooks - 1/4 inch.

I think I'll like them since I have 1/4 inch holes. The pegboard I bought at Lowes is about 3/6 or a little more and not 1/4 inch thick. It is probably metric.

I will post a picture of my board when I'm done. I wish I'd paid a little more for the Uline peg board 2 x 4 foot pieces which I believe are commercial grade. The hangers I ordered:

Great info on the different attaching methods. I had not seen the plugs or the screw type. I am going to try a few things. A good pegboard setup is very handy and can look good too. A bad pegboard setup is just frustrating...
