I use pegboards for both storage and display. I'm a retired DIYer with an interest in refurbishing older American-made hand tools. ReStores and the like are places I check out frequently, and the majority of the items you see in the workshop were bought at RS or consignment shops. But it's not indiscriminate: the tools have to be at least in principle something I'd use around the house or on a project.

I'm a pegboard sort of guy, or used to be. My old compact workshop in California had walls that were 100% pegboard. How I organized it was based on what I did in each of the areas and what tool was there. The wood lathe had woodturning tools, centers, etc. on the pegboard behind it. The drill press had hooks for vises, various jigs I used frequently. The bandsaw pegboard had spare blades, fences, miter guides, etc. back there. The woodworking bench pegboard was loaded with clamps of all types and lengths. The dirty work bench had sets of screwdrivers, combination wrenches, etc., arranged by size and type. Most of those were different from the ones in the tool box and chest next to the bench.

I don't think there's any standard way to do it, really. It's an individual thing to organize a working space. Everyone has different needs and habits, so, everyone's pegboard wall looks different.

Currently, after moving to our townhouse, the work area in the garage has a very different arrangement that reflects the kinds of things I'm doing now, which are very different from what I used to do. We change. Needs change. Life changes. Tool organization changes.

At home, most tools in tool cabinets. Long stuff like saws, tee squares, clamps and Kregg tools, along with package goods go on the peg board. I don't have much wall space for peg board but I do have a lot of benches, cabinets and hardware bin storage. I do have one peg section for wrenches, but they are not my first go to. I'm "car mechanic inclined" where stuff tends to belong in a tool chest and I tend, mainly, towards car projects.

At the cabin, the whole garage is lined with peg board. A lot of stuff I would have in cabinets at home are on pegs at the cabin. Wrenches, screw drivers, hammers, pliers, plumbing tools, etc., etc. The reason for this is I'm not there much and I tend to not remember or not know where to look for tools. So I keep them in the open. Another is that I don't have the tool density that requires using drawers. I do have some mechanics tools in small tool boxes and blow molded cases -- something I would never do at home.

The wall has expanded a bit. Just wish I had some Snap On tools hanging on the wall.

I once used the loops to hold pliers, but it takes up a lot of board space and pliers need headroom to be removed - not an efficient use of space. Based upon recommendations in this forum, I picked up a Plyworx Pliersrack PLR15 Plier Organizer. It has two pins that fit into holes in the back that are spaced to fit on a standard pegboard. Very useful, it frees up a lot of room yet the pliers are easily identifiable. Besides one mounted on the garage pegboard, I have the similar PLR16 attached on the outside of my toolcart.
