I’m debating on what I should hang and it’s actually making me overthink it. So, let me ask the brain trust, what tools do you keep on the board and what kind do you keep in a drawer?

I keep most things in drawers because I take them out for a project and keep them out while I'm working on it. Some stuff has ended up on the wall because I have no where better to put it, while other stuff is accessible on purpose.

However, I have:

  • a Phillips 1 - 3 and a four piece flat-blade set close at hand,
  • a pair of combination pliers and needlenose,
  • a couple measuring tools (e.g. calipers, small speed square, drill bit depth tool, dividers),
  • marking tools (pens, pencils, paint pens, scribes and awls),
  • Wd-40 and brake cleaner,
  • a propane torch,
  • a knife or three,
  • center punch,
  • adjustable wrench, and
  • a couple diamond stones.
That's probably all that is there intentionally - but there's lots of other stuff there incidentally.

I think it might depend on what type of work you're doing (e.g. machining, mechanics or woodworking) and what types of benchtop tools are nearby. My drill press is right beside the tool wall for example, so the center punch, calipers, square, etc get used frequently.

I have a couple diamond stones because I find I'm making quick sharpening adjustments to things somewhat frequently - but nearby in one of the tool boxes I have a lot more sharpening gear, it just doesn't need to be out.

Propane torch is used a lot - but it's out in the open because the shop is heated by a woodstove. First thing I do when I enter usually is use it to fire up the heat.

Gotta have a knife handy to open packages, trim things, etc.

Pliers - often you just need to grab, pull, twist or hold something briefly. It's no big chore to open a drawer to grab a specific pair but having some slip joints or combination pliers in easy reach saves time.

Mainly consumable packaged goods that don't store well in a drawer or on a shelf.
Spools of electrical wire, tape, cuttoff wheels.

I used to have a few drills and impact tools up there, but I hung a cabinet that they all live in now.

I'll have to take a look today and see whats up there.

I have pegboard in the basement, and mostly keep non-mechanics tools on it. Handsaws, bar clamps, levels, pipe wrenches. Tape also fits well on it, since it’s a good visual stock keeping method for how many rolls are left. I also like hammers on pegboard.

I don’t like the screwdriver holders you can buy for pegboards. A little shelf with holes drilled works much better. Pliers are also good to have a few at hand but I haven’t found a great method to put them on a board - maybe a magnetic rail.

My main work surface is the top of a Gen I HF 44" box. Behind it, I have pegboard with enough stuff on it for quick access for a lot of jobs. Metric and standard nutdrivers, screwdrivers, two adjustable wrenches, 3/8 sockets in metric & standard, a 1/4" drive standard socket set, wrenches from 6 to 22 and 1/4 to 1 inch, and a few pliers. I like having the basics readily available.

On another pegboard, I hung up my Milwaukee stuff: 3/8 & 1/2 impact wrenches, drill & driver, and oscillating tool.

We got lost of dust, spiders and everything condensates & rust during the winter/spring warm ups. I prefer to not use pegboards and keep my tools inside drawers or such.

as far as hand tools, basic screwdrivers and a few pliers are on pegboard at both workbenches. These are all duplicated in the toolbox of course.
Then pegboard gets everything else that doesn't really work in my toolbox setup: c-clamps, bar clamps, bolt cutters, hand saws, grease gun, tape, wire, flap wheels, drywall tools...

Pretty much do the same. I keep my tools in my box. ****** stuff on the PB.

Just the stuff you use most often. DON'T be one of those guys that think everything they own has be on the pegboard. It serves dual function as a display too so make it look nice but functional.

I kept the stuff I was always using or things that really didn't fit in a drawer well. None of this was on display because I kept the cabinet closed.

Moved it to the other side of the garage. Put the most used pliers on the outside. Hammers and saws on the inside. The wrenches are in the tool box now. The side one. I keep tape and rolls of sandpaper for easy access. Along with misc stuff.

My garage rearrangement resulted in a very small pegboard, maybe 12x36" so I only keep the very basics on it.
I like is since it is less cluttered
small Channel-locks
small and large needle nose pliers
small and large diagonal cutters
3 screwdrivers
wood chisel
heavy duty scissors
box cutter
Work Tunes ear muffs
safety glasses
My hammer rack is under the pull-out bench grinder.

I keep as much as I can on Peg Board. Screw drivers are kept in a home made holder, using 1X PVC material. Wrenches are held on screws driven into a piece of PVC latice. Harbor Freight used to have coupons for the Magnetic Holder strip for free, I would get one every time I went. I find these are great to hold odd tools, more efficient space wise than peg board holders you purchase.

I just reorganized my shop and I've got a long stretch of wall behind a workbench I'd like to use for pegboard. The problem is my shop is a metal shop and everything gets routinely coated in metal dust so I try to keep everything in cabinets. Does anyone have a pegboard inside a shallow wall cabinet? Does that eliminate the point?

I'll have to grab a picture tonight but in the basement workbench I keep a handful of tools useful for projects that get done down there.

Slightly off-topic but what are some pegboard options? By that I mean are there better options than the pressed fiberboard stuff you can get at Home Depot?

Check out wall control offerings - nice punched / finished steel pegboard (with slots added).

Ikea has its skadis - cheap more of a fully laminated fiberboard of slots - but standard pegboard stuff doesn't fit.

There's all kinds of stuff out there, just depends on what you're looking for.

Wow, that stuff looks great! That may be the ticket. Rockler sells it so I can pick up locally at the store and save shipping. Thanks!

Yeah, I'm that guy today.... as soon as I posted I did a google search and found a ton of options....

Where can we buy such gigantic pegboards? I generally prefer to keep tools in box. But for things with irregular shapes, this might be the best

I hang the things I reach for most frequently, plus it saves room in the boxes. It's been working well.

Maybe they just look huge to you. The standard size available in lumberyards is 4’ x 8’ Some guys paint the surface.

I put this above a fold down work top, I use it for small quick things and we have to bundle up cardboard and paper for recycling so it makes a great space for that
