I was given about 50 full sheets of brown (dark) peg board, I was thinking about doing the entire inside of my garage with this, but it would have to be painted. I guess my question is how much peg board is too much?

Are you going to be putting it over soemthing else? Are your walls going to be insulated? My only thought is if you're going to use it instead of sheetrock or something that you may let moisture into the wall cavity and insulation. And if you pollyd the wall you may still get moisture going through all the holes and condensating on the poly.

Even on 16" center studs, the pegboard would be kinda flimsy IMO.

I don't know man...

Sell the stuff and sheet your walls.

I thought all pegboard would look to monolithic, so I came up with this idea.
It's the 1/4" HD prefinished stuff, I wouldn't use 1/8"
What do you think?

My old shop was built in 81 and had plywood on the lower 4 feet and pegboard above to the ceiling. It was insulated behind. I loved it and never had any problems.

I Hung OSB all in my shop then framed up the areas I wanted to use peg board on with 1x1's then screwed the pegboad up. I have many power tools and stuff hanging on it. No problems yet.

I can see major issues with using peg board without drywall or something else behind it.

For the most part....we depend on drywall as part of the vapor barrier.....peg board will basically be as if nothing was there....

Additionally, talk about a collector for dust......in about 10 years....I can see it being an issue....especially since the stuff is not much more than MDF....and we know how well MDF does when it gets wet.

Dr X,
Lots of Pegboard can work well. It should be 1/4" w/1/4" holes if used for tools. The typical 1/8" stuff is pretty flimsy and will bulge and distort with any real weight.
You'll have to primer or seal the brown stuff or it can take several coats in order to stop soaking in (been there.).
There are several good industrial 1/4" hook designs so you never have to use the ************ homeowner hooks that have given Pegboard a bad name for decades.
I've had my shop lined with it for over 25 years and no problems, plenty of strength for automotive tools.
We just did my son's shop and it has a lot more heavy tools hanging now than shown in these pics.

I vote for the ply on the bottom half and peg on the top half.
I prefer the 1/4 inch thick, but free is free.
Paint it before you put it up.
It is a lot easier.

Anybody got a link to those good hooks that don't fall out?

Wallpeg are tough, rigid hooks that we used in my sons shop. They are under tension when installed and will not fall out. They make a heavy duty L-hook with gusseting (very bottom of page JUMBO style.). I love the standard J-style, L-style,and clips. Box shaped ones seem fairly useless for most tools. These hooks are plenty HD for automotive and they are VERY tight when mounted in holes. Great guy to deal with too. Real good stuff. Not made for 1/8", only fits the proper and Manly 1/4".
I have Zero Tolerance for "Hook fallout" and feel that it is the most horrible thing that can ever happen to a man. :) I once beat a wire peghook into a flat, submissive ball, then torched it to liquid in a rage.(I'm better now). These satisfy. Get the sampler pack.

Here's one style that I have not used yet but others seem to like a lot.

Anyone else getting a "site not trusted" when trying to checkout on the wallpegstore site? Is this unusual?

Best pegboard hook system I've found is this:

I had an entire 24 ft long wall of my garage lined with 1/4" thick by 1/4" hole pegboard panels and picked up a whole lot of the system. It's freak'n awesome. The hooks and other accessories screw into the pegboard and are rigidly anchored to the panels. No hooks will lift out and the hooks are very strong. And because the hook thingies screw into the pegboard you can get very creative with how they are oriented to create all sorts of holder options.

And no, I don't work for the company. It's just one of those things that you find something awesome and you want to share.

I started out with some variety kits so I could get a feel for the system, then expanded by buying specific hooks, loops, spray can holders, and spring clips.

I think you can get this stuff through Amazon.com but I found one of the local hardware stores had it in stock.

And yeah, it's worth every penny.

+2 on Triton hooks! A word of caution/(hey I got a deal!) on Amazon. I ordered a couple sets of the 6-pack plier hooks but when they arrived they were only 2-packs. When I made a dispute, Amazon just cancelled the order and didn't want me to send them back due to shipping costing more than the hooks... I thought about ordering more and getting the same claim/free hooks but my conscience wouldn't allow me to.

Problem is I still need 10 more hooks...??? :dunno:

Hi Airbuff, where did you get the magnetic tool strip for the pegboard? Also is your black peg board the plastic stuff from wallpeg store, or more traditional pegboard painted black? Are you still liking those hooks?
