Pegboard as a finished wall?

I've read on here a few times about people using pegboard as a finished wall in thier garage. What I'm curious about is how the pegboard was stood off the insulation. I'm planning to run OSB or plywood on the lower 3' of the wall, a full sheet of pegboard above that, and finally drywall to take up the remainder.

Could I rip 1-1/2" wide OSB strips and use them to pad out the pegboard? Is that enough clearance that the pegs won't poke holes in the insulation behind them?

Is it a bad idea not to install drywall on top of the insulation? Am I losing a lot of the heat retention?

Thanks,
Ed

I used furring strips to hold the board off the wall. Also paint the wall behind black as it will look a lot better.

How thick are you furring strips? Do you ever poke into the wall behind the pegboard when you insert hooks?

I have alot of pegboard in my shop , If you do not have plastic between the insulation and pegboard you will poke holes in your insulation with your pegboard hooks.

My walls are covered in pegpoard, with insulation behind them. The pegboard butts right up on the insulation. Pegboard hooks only go in a very little bit before curving up and locking into place. The lower peg (keeper?) goes about flush with the back of the pegboard.
The insulation isn't stretch so tight that it doesn't have any give to it--if it was tight, then yeah, I can see the little bit of the top peg on the hooks poking into it and tearing it. But when you insert the peg, and it hits the paper on the back of the insulation, that paper is going to give enough that it won't tear. At least mine hasn't in 4 years, and a whole lot of hooks.

Sounds like a great idea. You have the ability to put haggers anywhere and also I would think they would help absorb noise. I like to work sometimes late at night in my shop and keeping down noise is inportant. Thanks for the idea.

I have several areas in my shop where pegboard is what covers the insulation. I installed the stuff shortly after I moved in ten years ago with no problems regarding anything from that day to this.

I have it in my garage too and I love it. 2/4 walls are peg board and it's a lot easier than drywall to install.

I did most of the walls in pegboard furred off the sheetrocked walls. I decided to use the drywall for fire, insulation, etc.
