I have only two or three pegboard hooks total in my basement and garage shops and I've zip-tied them to keep 'em in place. They're probably recycled zip-ties, too, salvaged from the packaging of some article.

They are indeed a PITA.

Back when I use to have pegboard I used zip ties and a pair of needle nose pliers to feed them through.

Hot melt glue on the hooks when you put them in will tack themselves to the back side of the board and stay in place. If you need to move one, you can still pop it free as the glue will release from the metal if enough effort is applied. No damage to either surface.

I have some of the older hooks that my Father had purchased back in the 60's. These fit tightly in the holes in the peg board and don't pull out like the newer hooks.

See CrisEpost on this thread post #65

id agree though older hooks were better than what is usually available at local hardware today-I was surprised especialy on small single hooks, no lower lug to catch a hole, I guess it costs too much to electro weld metric coat hangers. Also as mentioned most places stock 1/4" pb and sell hooks for 3/16 . Last bunch I bought came with the plastic straps OP pictured-I wasnt impressed, as many broke installing as using.

OP, I've had good luck with the hooks you posted. Some have been in my shop pegboard for ten years and still held up. Cheap and easy. What's not to like.

Hey guys

Ok, I'm started to get really fed up with my pegboard hooks falling off everytime I lift a tool off of them.

I have these Crawford retainers:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BQR7BI/?tag=atomicindus08-20

It's the only brand I ever see for sale at any of the major home improvement department stores...

Does anyone know of a better product?

Cheers!

It sounds like you maybe have 1/4" pegboard, but 1/8" hooks. I made sure to buy the thicker hooks, so no retainers necessary.

Buying the correct hooks will make a difference as I have been there before. The other suggestion I have it to buy 3/16 or 1/4 pegboard and stay away from 1/8 pegboard.

Once I bought better pegboard, it solved half my problems. The rest was solved buy spending a few dollars more and buying better quality hooks.

I used those Crawford retainers, they are nothing more than a band-aid.

I had a couple of the Crawford style clips and they didn't work very well for me. They would pop out if you pulled on the peg.

I bought some of those "Stay-put" ones with the screw in the McMaster link above and they worked great. I think I got mine at Northern Tool or Home Depot.

Uh huh. Like a champ!

Usually these setups come with these plastic clips that fly off with just about any vibration. If you want it hidden/to use peg holes next to the hook, you could chain them all together from behind with picture hanging wire (not the braided stuff the thin stuff). They would shake rattle and roll but they probably won't come off.

Old thread, I know, but I have a question on the talon system.

I have a bunch of 1/4 inch pegboard in the garage.
These are made for 1/4 inch, correct?
I tried some plastic ones from ebay, and am having to send them back. Very cheezy.

I would buy an assortment of true 1/4 inch steel hooks, but I can't find them anywhere with screwdriver holders that are worth a spit. And hardly anyone has true 1/4 inch.

Yup.

Talon hooks are pretty awesome.

I've used a mix over the years...

1/4 pegboard is the best..

Locking the pegs in place with zip ties works pretty well. (first pic, between 2nd & 3 CL)

Steel hooks with the "second" peg that locks in place aren't bad.

The use of steel hooks with the plastic retainer (such as the Lehigh) are good.

Way back when (I'm thinking 20 years ago plus/minus) Sears offered some plastic pegs. They were very good. I especially like the single "shafted" holder.

There is a GJ Vendor http://wallpegstore.com/ that I've purchased from recently, that are as good or better than the Sears plastic ones. 6th picture. Alliance Members get a discount as well.

And of course retail hooks aren't bad, especially if modified to work..

Also do specially made tool holders screwed to the peg board or the underlying furring strips / studs.
