Pegboard...many still use it?

In the picture you see I have a large piece of pegboard above the workbench (which will be coming out and replaced with cabinets). Does any body still use pegboard and where? I am taking the pegboard down to install upper cabinets and don't know if I should put it on the other side of the garage (16 x 22) or just toss it.

Yeah, I've got quite a bit of it. Stuff works great.
I've even got a span of it in the garage to hang some commonly used rope, cords, shovels, etc. As long as it stays dry it great stuff. Zip ties around the backside and over the hook help things not balanced stay on.

I'm using it on one wall for my yard tools, white pegboard. It brightens it up and easier than dealing with sheetrock and mud work. Insulate, hang white pegboard. Done.

I also like it between the top of a workbench and up to the cabinets you are planning on installing. Keeps it brighter around the bench for working. Couple of lights below the cabinets and you are set.

Just my 2 cents,

Mm

I love my peg board. I refuse to use a tool box.

I'm selective on pegboard use based on location. Basement workbench has two full sheets (one vertical/one horizontal) holding lighter household tools. The shed has a ripped section that fits between the lowest shelf and the back of the workbench. I can't use pegboard in the garage because of the weight of the tools (so I have to rely on HD shelving or drawers). Trim your pegboard to fit in any available space for those common tools you just don't want to dig for.

Personnaly, I hate the stuff. However I do have it on the cabinet doors, I only use it for hanging things inside (sandpaper, brushes, etc.). The black panel is pegboard.

I've used pegboard in my last two shops and will in the new one. I hang odd items, quick access items, etc. And it does brighten up a dark wall. It can hide wires and hoses too. I've planned a full 4X8 sheet for my new shop.

I was going to suggest that (looks awesome.) Pegboard makes a great backsplash under cabinets. I use it to put tools for my wife and kids...that way they stay out of my box with the nice sh#t in it!:D

I put some between the bench and the upper cabinets to keep a few things handy. I mounted it on 1x2's, painted it and trimmed it out. I have since changed the lights to under cab flourescents.

Hey THANKS guys....all good ideas I hadn't thought of. Looks like I'll have to wait until next weekend to take it down, then will rip it to the size b/w the countertop and the upper cabinets.

Thanks a lot!

I think peg board is ugly and it tends to make a place look cluttered even when it's not. But, it can be functional if that's what you're going for. Tinbender's peg is about as nice as I've seen it look.

It's like having someone waiting to hand you the next tool you need. So for stuff I use a lot, it's great.

Drawers for everything else.

I used it to cover up some gnarly wall on either side of the cabinet. I don't plan to hook anything on there, but I like the way it looks.

(What? Yeah, if you look real close there you can see a dogbone. :) )

I agree, I like it as a back-splash under the cabinets. I just have a enough to store my odd shaped items, levels, hammers, squares, etc.

I am also a fan of pegboard. All of my primary general workbenches have full or partial sheets mounted on the wall behind. I keep a set of general, commonly used tools on the pegs so when I'm working on something at the bench all of the most common tools are at my fingertips ... set of wrenches (SAE & metric), screwdrivers, pliers, 3/8" sockets, etc. ... common tools, not oddities. Like Jack O. says, it's like having someone hand you the next tool. The odd tools go into separate tool drawers and a broader/full range set of tools go into the main roll-around tool chest.

Suggestions for your pegboard installation ... paint it a light or bright color. The natural brown pegboard is too drab. Cut the pegboard to fit in the desired space and frame and stiffen with 1x2 or 2x2. Keep it organized, neat and don't hang a bunch of seldom used junk on it.

I actually realized yesterday (don't ask) that my entire garage is pegboard on the inside. ALL of it.

And i had a problem in that my toolbox was overflowing.

This is what happened today after a $40 trip to HF. Bear in mind that most of what's on the pegboard is my spares, save for the pliers.

Not the prettiest thing in the world, but this garage is not likely long-term for me and there's bigger issues at stake than where to hang a few tools.

I use to have all my tools hanging out in plain site, but Mrs Shopnut said the neighbors were starting to talk. :)

I hung pegboard on the backside of my cabinet doors for those low profile items. It only works if your shelves aren't full depth though. It works great for those misc rolls of tape too.

I use white pegboard instead of wall board and taping, mudding and painting. I mount osb horizontally for the first 4' of wall and then use on top of the resulting ledge of osb...I only dropped one once and broke a big toe as a result. I have too many tools to lose in drawers plus I like the way they look displayed, not to mention how handy it is to have them at hand.

I also have two workbenches that have plain/brown pegboard back walls.

I have most of my tools on 40 feet of pegboard:

Bigger tools (in their own boxes) go under the benches. Nothing is on the weld bench walls so that grinding grit can't collect.

I like the idea of using pegboard, but my problem with it that in too many cases the metal brackets don't stay in place when removing or placing a tool. What should be a simple one-handed grab turns into a delicate two-handed maneuver.

In my case (my shop, my father's shop), the pegboard is rigidly attached to the wall so using the zip-tie approach to secure the brackets is not possible.

Any suggestions?

I have 12-foot walls in the shop, and did 4x8 sheets of plywood from ceiling-down. From 4-feet above the floor to the ground, I did corrugated metal siding.
I have some tools on the walls, rulers and measuring stuff in one area, my bead roller dies on a wall, and a bunch of parts that would otherwise be taking up shelf space.
I also have a bunch of signs and stuff, so has a man-cave feel to it.

Here's what I like about it: In one spot I have all my extension cords neatly coiled and on a peg.
My horizontal bandsaw is parked against the wall... behind it, I have pegs with two deadman roller stands (to support long stock while being cut), another peg holding an extra blade, and another peg holding the table attachment to use it vertically.

I have a Craftsman trouble light on a reel, and next to it, I have a spare bulb in the package.

Over by the drill press, I have a lot of my drill press accessories on hooks behind the drill press.

While I was setting up the shop, the pegboard allowed me flexibility to fine-tune locations of tools, accessories, etc.

It's cheaper and MUCH faster than sheetrock, too.

Tip that a lot of people don't get: use 1.25-inch deck screws, and put them thru the holes in the board, don't drill new holes. The heads counter-sink, and hold the pegboard firmly.

As for hooks, the "good" ones have the "setting" peg slightly oversized, so they are a press fit into the holes. I use an old piston wrist pin slipped over the hook to leverage it into the hole.

Your mileage may vary.

I just saw a great idea on the KREG site. Make the base of drawers out of pegboard and fit dividers with little dowels in the bottom edge to locate them. An added bonus is that any accumulated dirt just falls through.

As a partsman, I approve. Thats what my pegboard gets used for. And for clamps, bits etc. so like Jack said... its like having someone hand the the tool you need.
