Good morning.... I'm rearranged my garage and decided to to get away from the large piece of plywood hung on the wall to store tools and switch to pegboard. I went to the our local bog boxed - Lowes & HD and found peg board with thelarger 3/16 hole but the holders seemed much smaller. So I googled up best pegboard for tools and found a link whicch led me to this forum. A found lot of useful information but most of it a couple of years old. My first question - ok here goes - does size matter? Will I be I ended up frustrated if I by the 3/16 holed peg board or just buy a good 1/8 pegboard and all will be good and my tools be hung straight and sure? Any and all suggestions for hooks and tool storage ( nothing fancy just econmical) Really glad I found this forum. Thanks

Get the 3/16. The hooks and accessories are larger in diameter and as such can support heavier items. Since you are hanging tools from it.

There's been several threads on GJ regarding who sells the best hooks. Sorry i don't have a link for you, I'm on my phone

Like they say, bigger is better :D

I would go with the 3/16" and pick up some hooks here and there. If I remember sometime, I'll look out in my shed and I THINK I may have a bowl full of the large hooks. I'd give them to you as I don't use pegboard. But if you keep your eye out at garage sales, flea markets and such, you can find the heavy duty hooks.

On a side note, I remember reading in Popular Mechanics or one of the mags similar, that if you have a problem with the hooks coming out, use a little dab of clear silicone caulking to hold them. A lot of people will also use tie-wraps to hold the hooks, but they put them on before the pegboard goes up.

I replaced the 1/8" pegboard with some 3/16 or 1/4", whatever Menards carried. There is a difference to the thicker pegboard.

Go peg board or slat-wall. thicker is better for sure. I found mine for cheap through craigslist from a store that was closing. Like 11 cents a sheet cheap.

X2, if you can find a store going out of business can get lots of hooks for pegboard cheap. There was a hardware store near my work that went out of business, I got a ton of hooks cheap.

I completely disagree on pegboard being ugly - but that's a "taste" thing....and we ALL think we've got taste! lol.

I don't recommend slatboard because the kind with the metal sorta "liners" for the slots - which hold more weight - is very costly. The cheaper type without the metal liners works well until/if you overload it then the slot tears out and there's no way to fix it that doesn't look like ****.

I have 1/8" pegboard in my entire shop because it was there when I bought the house. It had yellowed so I just painted it fresh white. I hung the 3/16" pegboard in the main garage because it is heavier, more capable and came prefinsihed in white. I used 1/4" strips ripped from long 2x4's to cover the seams and painted them white too. I think it looks good. But I do NOT hang every single thing I own on pegboard. Then it DOES look ugly , IMHO.

it really depends on what your putting on it and how big your gonna go with the sheet. this is what i did:

i used 1/8 and it works good in small sections. i couldn't go taller because my work bench is too deep. it helped me to know what i wanted to put on the pegboard before framing out a piece. i wouldn't just put a 4x8 sheet up and then decide what to put on it.

I have white 1/4" pegboard on all walls of my carports, shop and barn and can "hang the world"! The goal is nothing on the benches or on the floor. White reflects the light nicely too. I think pegboard should be in the building code as manditory covering over insulation...easy to take down if you move or need access into the wall for some reason...try that with wallboard or OSB! imho.

Yours rocks regguy.

Pegboard in a garage/shop seems totally appropo and purposeful. And I totally agree, just because you choose to use it doesn't mean you've gotta hang everything but your underwear on it!

I do have a few things on it, I don't like to load the walls with stuff to mantain an uncluttered look.

I think when white pegboard is installed correctly as is the case in regguy1's shop, it gives a clean, high tech look. In my case, I hung it horizontally over OSB also hung long ways (horizontally) over the blown in cellulose insulation. At $10 per sheet, it's an economical way to cover walls as opposed to drywall and the taping and mudding and sanding and painting involved. I'm not sure of the fire protection value comparison however.
