Some Guys are just better at it than others.
Its Finding the right hangers, or the Tools that you want out, Or just the right patience to do it Right.

I have a Buddy...an old neighbor, That takes this Job seriously!
And its the Funniest thing you've ever seen...when He gets another tool!

Check his setup out!!!

I want to hire him to do mine!

This is his back wall...

Wow. I don't care much for the stuff, myself. I guess I don't think it looks very nice. But then again it is meant to be functional, not pretty. It is definitely highly functional.

A lot of wasted wall space. If he would have hung stuff from that wood shelf, he could mount other junk along the wall. Hang some tools like people do for pot racks.

Even with the stuff in the front, he would still have access to the tools behind it.

So what you need to do, is find the oddest shaped tool you can, and buy it for him :D

Then sit back and watch the entertainment of him rearranging everything to fit it.

I like pegboard. It appeals to the perfectionist in me. I like Jack's small use of it because his is appealing, tasteful, yes I'll admit his color coordination appeals to me. I ALWAYS read threads about it with big expectations.

But this guy just has TOO MUCH **** HANGING up, in my opinion. Yeah, he's good at getting it to all fit but it's too cluttered, too frantic for me. Am I the only one?

...Nope.

Peg Board is what I use out in the garden shed for the small garden hand tools, the spool of trimmer line, the extra mower blade, etc.

My kid's workbench has pegboard. Even they can't stand using it, LOL:

In the shop, tools go in toolboxes.

Some older GJ examples of hanging tool organization. I LIKE these:

Wow!

My buddy Ken thought it would be cool for you guys on his favorite blog to see my pegboard; so I thought I'd check out the site. Thanks for the input everybody.

Some say it's too cluttered, while others say that I'm wasting space. One guy doesn't "like the stuff"......WTF????? What stuff -they're freakin' tools! They're GOOD tools, not the Harbor Freight Chinese **** that I see in many of the pictures on this site of manicured, sparce, and for my purposes, useless pegboards.

I've been a professional Carpenter for 25 years. I'm not a mechanic. I don't need to be told to put my tools in a toolbox (cute picture of your kid by the way rwhite692) -I've carried several for years. Before I set up this pegboard I struggled to find things when I needed them. Now everything is right at my fingertips. I still have tool boxes (7 of them for different kinds of work: framing, trim, drywall, concrete, etc..., and they're full), but when I'm working on a project at home or need something for a side job I don't have to dig through them to find what I need.

It's not cluttered and it's not a mess; unless you're a priss who thinks his garage should look like a sterile laboratory.

Oh, and hanging stuff in front of other stuff from the shelves like pots and pans is severely stupid.

While you guys complain, I bet this guy^ knows where every tool is and could probably find it with his eyes closed. Honestly, I see it as a very well functioning work shop. He can sit there, and grab any tool he needs quickly and most likely without getting up. He doesn't have to remember what drawer that file is in, etc. This garage is what I call functional.

EDIT: On a side note, is that one of those Bostich ratcheting, adjustable wrenches I see hanging just to the right of the screwdrivers? How are you liking it if so?

Thanks for the support guys! Aside from Jack Olsen's kind comment early on I was really taking a beating.

To gtrotter: I don't really like the ratcheting adjustable wrench (it's a Crescent version), it slips off too easily and the jaws seem to move without adjustment (just like a normal adjustable wrench), so I have to keep setting it. It works in a pinch when you don't want to grab a drive, a bunch of sockets and an adjustable wrench to do a job though.

To Alamedasam: I wish my wrenches were Snap-On (Craftsman is good enough for a wood butcher). And if I did have a set of Snap-On's it would be a crime not to have 'em in a big 'ol shiny red KRL7022.

To Avgas: Yeah, it reminds me of Ace too, especially my garden tool section.

I like it!

My house came with a rather nice pegboard setup (huge!) from the previous owner that happens to fit with my workbench perfectly (to the inch!) so it's a nice backing. While I prefer to keep most tools in the box, there are certain things that just don't fit in there and which I need often enough that I don't want to get into the box over and over for them.

There's also the awkward stuff that doesn't really fit in with the contents of my box and would actually clutter up the box if I had it in there (levels, hacksaws, all that stuff). That stuff all goes on the pegboard and I try to keep it organized, but I am humbled by this guy's setup!

Very well done sir and I get where you're coming from. Don't mind the naysayers and pot-stirrers, I think it's cleverly done and appreciate the work that went into it, as I am sure many others do.

I think that's pretty cool and very well organized but it would not work for me.
All my tools would be covered in grinding dust and stuff.
I prefer to keep my tools in the tool box(s).

Kudos to him though for his organizational skill.
If it works for him that's all that matters.

Bruce.

Exactly the way I see it. I can appreciate the work and functionality of a well set up system though.

If it works for you it's great. Who cares what people on here think, they aren't working in your shop.

One step further would be to take a picture of every tool and paste it to the pegboard directly behind the place the tool will be stored. That way when you are done with the tools you konw where they go and if a spot is empty you know what tool is missing.... :headscrat

You're right, obviously. A lot guys on this forum have just elevated the garage into the realm of high art. Comments and opinions form here based more on the aesthetic than the functional; that's just the culture on this forum.

Don't take it personally, your system looks very functional for a working garage.

My next project will be to build one of these for my place:
http://www.woodsmithshop.com/download/301/slidingdoorshopcabinet.pdf

Looks like a pretty good design.

I like it,
the best part is I could see right away that one of my my kids has been in there "BORROWING" tools again.

Some call it cluttered, I call it efficient. The only down side I see is the grinding dust and over spray that would get on them in my garage.

I know that Pegboard is not for everyone.
There are People out there that have Cabinets, Drawers, Boxes, Totes and Cases for everything.
I wish that I could do that.
But, I would forget where it was, and hate digging around to long for a tool.
(I wind up running out and buying another first...Thats just how my Mind works)
So...I love having the Tools that I need and use the most...On my Pegboard.
Easy to get, Easy to see whats Missing, and easy to put away.

abomino has alway given me **** (in a joking way) about how my Pegboard is set up.
And that, if i gave him a weekend to "Go Nutz"...he would have it so much more organized.
I tend to agree...He would!
And he has that Open Invitation!
I would even take Before and after Photos just to prove what a True Pegboard Artist can Do!
(even for those who dont like tools hanging out...ya gotta admit...it isnt easy setting everything up correctly. I seem to always change stuff around)

I dont have any of the big expensive tool boxes, so I use peg board and love it. I can see where all my stuff is and grab it at any time.

It does **** trying to find all the right hooks for it though. Half the time I have to buy a variety pack of hooks and only a handful of them are any good.

I like it. The great thing about it, is if you know you have said tool, you will visually spot it without having to open a single drawer.

Don't listen to everyone's opinion, the garage is set up for your purpose, not for someone to drool over it.

Well, I'd drool over it if I had that kind of wall space.

abomino what is the method to your madness?

I have some pegboard and several boxes, but 'fitting' stuff to the board is always hit or miss with me.
