Now call me crazy, but wouldnt the acetone evaporate very quickly? I would think if one was going to use this mixture they would have to mix it and use it right away.

I think the power steering fluid encapsulates the acetone and keeps it from evaporating or at leasts slows it down - I keep a small 4oz squirt bottle with a mixture of this in it and I've had no problems with it evaporating and it works as well as anything else I've tried, plus acetone and power steering fluid are two things I keep on hand anyways.

PB blaster (though I hate the aerosol , which generally seems to reaim itself mysteriously in the direction of my face or clothing).

The home made version is almost identical to "eds red", an elixir used for gun cleaning, comprised of ATF, Acetone and mineral spirits, as I recall. It is VERY good for that (though it's no match for the aroma of Hoppes)

The Fabulous Blaster has always done it for me.. If anyone gets really bored, try the little experiment on the side of the can...:bounce:

"Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist, Bud Baker.
Don't forget the April 2007 "Machinist's Workshop" magazine comparison
test.

*They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with
the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a
"scientifically rusted" environment.

*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*

None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 .................. 238 pounds
PB Blaster ............. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds

*The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission
fluid and acetone.*
*Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one
particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now
use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about
as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.
"

I love studies like this! Kinda lays bare all the brand loyalty, don't it? I've been using Liquid Wrench, but I see ATF/Ace in my future!! Thanks for the info!

Here's the updated version of the ATF-Acetone - the original article, as printed in the magazine, stated the test was run with ATF and acetone. The test was actually run with Power Steering Fluid.

The author of the original article was contacted, and the updated results, and addition comments can be found here:

http://systems-engineering-associates.com/papers/avocations/Testing_Penetrating_Oils.pdf

In case you're wondering, he made a series of shafts and sleeves and corroded them in a salt bath solution. Then the load needed to break the shafts free was tested using a Baldwin compressometer set on 1200-pound scale to determine the load required on the 6 identical setups.

While the test results are interesting you need to keep in mind that there was only ONE test sample done per oil. And although each piece was electrolytically rusted to ensure uniformity, for it to be truly a useful and meaningful test it should have been repeated (at least twice) and the result averaged.

The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Mighty interesting results for simple acetone and ****** fluid!

Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
None ................. 516 pounds .
WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."
