So, what's the consensus on the best penetrating oil available? I know there's probably an old thread on this but there are likely new products since the last post.

I've used Kroil on gun-related stuff and it's very good, but I need to replace my empty aerosol WD40 and since a can of this stuff usually lasts four or five years for me, I want the stuff that will work the best.

You are going to get all the same responses the old threads had. A lot of times I just use 50/50 ATF and acetone. Just make sure you shake it before using it, as it really doesn't stay suspended long. Kroil is my go to store bought. I also like marvelous mystery oil.

Yes, there has been a few threads on this.

I like Kroil, but I use PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench and WD40 (buy a gallon can and squirt bottle).

Not the best but free, they have a rust penetrant

WD - 40 Specialist Product Free after rebate

Saw the form on a can at Lowes at the end cap in tool dept. Get one of seven products free. Most products were $7.00.
Here's the online form

NOTE: soaked the rear door key lock on my SUV with Kroil for two weeks and put the key in and tapped with a rubber hammer every few days. No luck. Used the WD Specialty Rust Penetrant for 24 hours and surprised that the key lock worked and still does after 6 months. Not saying that the WD did it but ?

I use Kroil. A little goes a long way.
I tried the 50/50 ATF/acetone and it would not mix. It acted like oil and water and separated out in seconds after shaking it.

Nothing works all the time; anything works some of the time. I keep Kroil, Liquid Wrench, PB Blaster and WD-40 on hand, and have tried several others. One intractable Indestro ratchet finally yielded to 6 months soaking in used motor oil.

Kroil is the best I've found in 3 decades of wrenching. Knock-er-Loose from grainger is pretty decent too. WD40 is the bottom of the barrel.

Then you must remember when it used to be the cheapest out there. I actually remember getting in trouble for using WD40 versus Kroil because of the price difference. Now the makers of Kroil think they **** three flavored ice cream ( I guess I may agree).

My favorite is Mouse Milk. I have never had it fail on me. Works great as drill and tap lube as well.

I be got gallons of mineral oil and Stoddard solvent too. Maybe I'll add a little ATF to them and see how they perform.

After whatever you use, add heat if you can. I think by vaporizing the liquid between the friction surfaces it expands (plus the metal expands), so that may help break the rust/gunk 'seal'.

Kroil is the best widely available product that I have used. Always helps to spray, then jar (light hammer blows). Heat is even better, as previously mentioned. I have never been so desperate as to use WD40 for a penetrant. One of my best friends, who is no longer with us, always said "my as well just piss on it as use WD40."

True, but I pass the cost on to my customers, so it doesn't really affect me. They get the benefit of me getting done quicker which saves labor charge. Everybody wins.

I love kroil, hard to beat in my book. Another good one is Starret M1. Maybe not as good as kroil, but is more general purpose making it a great compliment. I love the stuff for soaking cruddy nuts and bolts amazing cleaning ability.

I'm surprised there's 4 pages and no mention of pentro 90. It's made by Schaeffer's and I prefer it to kroil.

WD 40 is better than none but we use Liquid Wrench and on occasion another obscure brand found at farm stores but the wrench now comes in a couple flavors but,,, which spray is about like the high school swim team shaving hair again.
Getting some juice in a dry thread and worked over it is the name of the game and since we work a lot on stuff we keep we spray every bolt we put in.
Even on corrosive fertilizer equipment giving a bolt and nut a shot of WD40 before assembly makes a huge difference, even under water.
We use spray cans for convenience but back when we used bulk the juice was gallon of WD and pour in a pint to a quart of ATF.
Wrench really played competitive and now dominates the market. We use a little CRC if on sale but look for case sales when we can get it.
Kroil is ok but I aint fukkin with it.

Anywhere it gets near 3$ I am snagging half a dozen. I don't care for PB's can, fuggin gusher. I want a drop or 2 sometimes and the object isn't to make as much mess as I can. It was a bright spot with Kroil, the cans worked a long time then they cheapen that and it works about half way thru.

The stuff from Walmart is the worst unless its got some tech film it leaves. It just seems dry and one of the things I am after is oily trapped lubricant in threads vs them being a channel for the first drop of water that comes along.
