What a coincidence that I posted in this thread, and the ol' switcheroo happened to me today. I special-ordered a heater core for my wife's 85 Turbo-swapped Voyager. The part came in today, so I drive over there to pick it up. The box seemed awful heavy for a heater core. I cut the tape off, and what to you know, a dirty old used heater core was in the box! Good thing I opened it at the counter, I bet they would have never believed it. They all took turns looking at it in disbelief that it would come from their hub like that.

Good thing I hadn't tore into the dash yet, since the next one won't be in until Monday...

So, when those of you who have gotten home to discover your appeared-to-be new, potentially even sealed item was a used one, what kind of reaction do you get from customer service when you bring back your new box with an old item in it?

Why are the big box stores to blame? It's their customers doing the switch-er-roo.

because they are not checking the contents of returned items. If it has been returned, it needs to be inspected to,assure the item is complete and in new, unused condition before putting it back into stock.

I bought 3 of the "Tile" Bluetooth tags at Lowes and all 3 were empty and re-taped. I was prepared for a bit of a struggle to get a refund. Turned out to be no issue, and in fact I was thinking that they really ought to have scrutinized my story a bit more than they did.

Home Depot is really bad about just throwing stuff back on the shelf with no inspection, nor any "discount" for open box. I bought one of those Ridgid inspection cameras and found that it had been used and returned...upon further inspection of the 4 remaining on the shelf, they had ALL been used....and returned. Stupid.

I actually brought a damaged thing back told them it was damaged and wouldn't work and watched them put it back on the shelf for sale so I got a sharpie and wrote damaged on it. Even worse is buying antifreeze getting home and finding out it's clear because it's just water

I can't remember in which thread this was being discussed, but it certainly applies in a thread titled "people ****." The **** title is bestowed upon the driver of this yellow trike of course. When I went into the store to show him the difficulty his parking had caused this couple, he explained that it was okay because he worked for parking enforcement. Things got a little heated.(Photos taken and shared with consent of the couple)

As a paraplegic, things like that just torque me to the extremes. Normally I call the cops. If they can't come fast enough then I would just flatten his tires. Just on this last saturday a car was parked like that. So we pull in and I start to open my doors and was going to drop the lift
on the car but they got the idea fast enough to move. You can call me a bad guy but deal with this carp every day and you would not be so judgemental.

after the hurricanes we had some years ago ,the **** bag next door printed out all the items fema would pay for. went out and bought all of them and returned them latter.he was so proud he made copies of the list for all the neighbors. soon the stores got wise and would not return fema items. this type of **** is more of a lifestyle for these people than a one time deal. his wifes occupation is milking workmans comp . she seems to be very accident prone!!!! scumbags.

Here's a positive story. Back in 1968 I worked as an Asst. Manager for a big Western Auto store. Right before Christmas this lady came in looking to buy two bicycles for her boys for Christmas presents. She was in her early 30's, pretty in a worn-out way, and picked out two mid-priced bikes and I took her check--in those days we only looked at the address on the check and compared it to the address on the driver's license. As store ***'t manager I would OK checks and I'd familiarized myself with our list of bad-check writers in the K.C. area--her name wasn't on it. So I helped her load the bikes into her station wagon and off she went. A few days after Christmas the store manager handed me her check--it had come back from the bank marked "account closed". So I took it and drove to the address on the check and she answered the door. "I've been wondering when you'd show up." She said. She said her husband had left and she was having a hard time making ends meet and she wanted her boys to have a nice Christmas. She asked to pay the bikes off at $5 a week. I agreed to it. She paid $5 every week and paid them off. True story.
