Perfect drawer depth

I never liked the super extra deep drawers nor the super shallow ones. My Matco 4S box was like 24" deep which I found to be good even if they were 22". But even my KRL I find to be a little deep and the Epiq is non sensical. I'd rather have like a wide drawer 60x20" deep than a 40x30. Maybe I haven't been in the game long enough to understand the extra deep drawers. What's your preference.

The problem with a wide drawer is there is nothing supporting it in the middle. It's supported on both sides by the slides but will sag in the middle, especially when filled to the brim with sockets etc.

A deeper drawer is supported the full depth along both sides and has technically the same capacity in terms of area/volume but doesn't require the same amount of reinforcement to prevent drooping.

The issue I have with 30” drawers is limited space in my two car garage with both vehicles in it.

If I had a huge shop, I’d go for a 30” deep full extension drawer. But as a home gamer I want the full extension without being butted up against a vehicle.

I really wanted a 30” deep double bay or triple bay… but now I have been considering the fact that it won’t be that long until I have to Tetris this into a smaller space when we retire.

At bare minimum my main ratchet drawer has to be over 22” for my SLF80A.

I am not even considering triple bays any more. It would be much easier (not easy) to wrestle a double bay into a basement and add a couple end cabinets…

I want all the components to be small enough to carry into a basement mechanical room or whatever space I have when we downsize.

I figure that if I remove all of the drawers from a 25” width double bay… a few people should be able to get it down into a basement.

Hopefully when I retire, I will have a decent amount of garage space… but if I don’t… I would still like to keep all of my tools… if I can get away with it…

I have been moving a few things to my giveaway/donation boxes… but not as fast as even more tools move in…

Well if for some reason those perfect socket organizers are no longer part of your plans….I’m here for you :)

Those little strips come apart… I can Tetris them into a much smaller or different shaped setup.

If my kid doesn’t want them… they will be at my estate sale when I die or get put in a nursing home… but they are staying with me as long as possible.

Have any of you guys… without a walkout basement… moved a 25” depth toolbox into a basement?

How did it go? Did it feel safe? Were there issues?

Maybe when the Gen 3 44” comes out, I will look at 2 44” boxes and add end cabinets.

Wheels off, strapped to a red plastic sled and slid/lowered down with a come-along.
Safe? Meh. There was beer involved... Potential for destruction/doom added to the fun.

there is no "perfect" size as it applies to the space it needs to fit in; and this varies. In a typical modern two car garage (fits 2 Honda Civics) you probably won't have room for anything more than a 20" deep box on the side wall if you want to be open your passenger car door. Or actually want to remove a tire on that side of the car without feeling constrained. If you have a monster garage, then you can go as big as your budget allows.
I have older Craftsman boxes and they are 18"? deep and that is all I have room for on the sides of my 2 car standard home garage. Yes, I could have 24" deep ones and then barely be able to walk between the box and the vehicle. As it is, when I am going to do any auto maintenance, I park the vehicle towards the center of the garage, barely fitting in that side of the door, and then very carefully back it out.
