I have a need for a planer for a small project. Looking at the 6 amp hand held one. For the amount of use I don’t want to put a lot of money in one. I only have 8 or so pieces to do. I have no knowledge of the power tools.

Ask around. If you won't use it again maybe someone will do it for you. For 8 pieces I'd do it for fun and camaraderie.

Tell us more about your project needs.
I have little experience with the powered hand held planers but feel they are too aggressive, too narrow and unstable, all potential disasters for flattening wood. Those planers are good for tradesmen trimming door panels on job site but just not great for general woodworking.
If your project is so small, maybe a hand plane would be better.

Ok maybe I need a different tool.

Trying to trim out around some doors and need to made some trim thinner. One door I need to take down some 1/2" x 3/4" stock by about 1/8" to make it fit right. 2 other doors need something similar done but just different size.

Any suggestions? Wondering if I could rip it down with a table saw? Which I don't have either.
