Hey guys!

Im trying to build my own pergola in my back yard to keep cost down a bit im sourcing all the hardware etc. The only post to beam nice looking hardware brackets are crazy expensive ive been looking at these type but am unable to find any other in a similar style that are cheaper. To get everything i need for my 12x10 pergola its running me $800 in hardware alone. Thats crazy!!!

Depends on how your skills are, you could just notch the top of the post so the framing sits on it, or just bolt thru everything and not use the hardware. You could also look into timber frame connectors. Simpson strong tie has some stuff as well.

I agree with Chaos. That is some nice but unnecessary hardware.
Use a circular saw to cut a notch for the cross beams and use large carriage bolts. Countersink the nut end with a Forstner bit and you will have a very professional appearing build. And you won't have unsightly rust from those brackets years from now.

Tin snipped from found tin, no one will notice it's a facade and not the actual connector and the facades are utterly customized to your design.
Literally... Soup cans....
Too many solutions.

I do as the Guy's say above.

A large rabbett notch to set the "beam" in is best, then simply through bolt w Hot Dip Galv big Carriage bolts w large washers.

The depth of the rabbet can vary depending on appearance you want.

One could get by w/o the rabbet, just nail pin then drill through the assembly, then the bolts.

At least for a small backyard pergola.... it is more than adequate.

Seems to me, a great idea would be to look at photos of various Pergolas to get ideas and options. Marc

Agreed on the notching and use of long hex head timber screws.

For post to any kind of "Beam" connections, I would definately through bolt w at least 1/2" Hot Dip Bolts.

Not any sort of screw.

If at all possible, re tighten a year later. Marc

The 100% purpose of the OP hardware is jewelry bling, if one wants that.

Note - IF you read the description closely, they still use through bolts, purchased separately.

Structurally, it can be handled as posted above. Marc

there is no roof. how strong does it need to be ??? notch and plug the holes and be sure to weatherproof it so water cant sit in there and rot your joints.....i got my hot dipped galvinized bolts and screws for fraction of the price at a mom and pop h/w store.

Varty - Well, if you need that black bracketry bling, then you pay for it.

If you do not need it for appearance, you have your answer(s) above.

You can build the exact same pergola w/o the black stuff.

Pretty simple.

REALLY simple.

Consider consult this query with a Pro non hack Carpenter for his thoughts, I think could REALLY help you. Marc

Check these out:

www.fastenmaster.com/products/headlok

Also checkout 'Timberlock'

These are structural screws with load ratings similar to small plate style(Simpson) connectors. They are used for truss/rafter to plate and other connections. Your pergola shouldn't require heavy duty connections as its an open structure. Big advantage is they're pretty cheap and when installed per directions, they are mostly invisible. Easy to install, best to clamp framing members in place then install, most of the time pre-drilling is not required
