Permanent Bug and insect repealant ideas

So what ideas do any of the members here have for solutions to keeping pests from building nests on your garages or homes. Such as wasps, hornets bees and such.

My girlfriend and I have really began to start looking into building our first house. We are renting a house currently and after the two month battle in my garage agaisnt wasps and hornets Im just not going to do that ever again. Is there a spray anyone uses to keep them from possibly building nests in certain spots? We are also planning our first home build which will be a craftsman style home with matching shop/garage behind it. I cant help but see the endless ways a flying stinging insect could build a nest in a design like such. Are there trees we could plant around the area to help cut down on it? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure you can prevent insects form building nests in/on your home. If there was, everybody would have it and there would be one seriously rich dude somewhere.

I had a major problem here two years ago, started by getting rid of their food supply which in my case turned out to be a pear tree. I didn't cut down the tree, just cleaned up any pears as they fell. This has to be done on a daily basis. Next I went around and looked for their nests and killed them out at dusk using Raid wasp and hornet killer. After the nest is killed, remove it and burn it. The Raid was about the only brand that worked consistently.
They will always come back to their main nest at dusk so if you want to kill them all, wait until they are all home. I had some fairly large nests around the property and once I got them killed out, the problem considerably diminished.
Now I will still get one or two that try to build a nest, and I take care of them when I see them.

Brakleen for bees and such. as for Rodents, peppermint oil.

Make it hermetically sealed- you won't have a living organism in there. Oh, and by the way you won't survive either. Oh well, works in theory.

Go after them early and often. I prefer Yard Guard for wasps and spiders. It's good about getting into corners and cracks. Good for under bench use if you are going to be out of the shop for a while. Also, the Ortho Home Defense stuff I get at HD works very well for general bug kills. Other than that - deal with it. I have two nests on the shop right now. Yard Guard took care of the tenants - they didn't pay rent and got booted. Just make sure your cracks and crevasses are caulked and then rest is just keeping an eye on activity.

I buy the cheap long distance wasp stuff at Hme Depot. I go around about once a month and blast any new nests. I generally only clear all the nests about once a year, Ive never had any be reclaimed and the hope is the stragglers will land and get the poison too.

50 years ago I watched my uncle throw gas on them .I have also seen old folks hold a burning oil soaked rag under the nests.

I use the cheap long range spray can ........then run like heck !

old timers used to paint the eaves and porch ceilings a light blue. Don't know if it worked but it would sure be pretty on a modern house!!

I usually set off 4-6 bug bombs in my shop every 90days or so to get rid of bugs and insects. I dont worry too much about hornets or wasps unless they are in an area that I need to be in. Those guys eat lots of bugs themselves. Bust open a dirt dobbers nest and check out how many spiders they got in them.

We've done the sky blue paint under the eaves and porches and it does work on wasps.

Find a pet supply house and get something that contains Dursban, it is used to spray for fleas, and spray the eves and where ever the wasps build nests. Do not spray on a nest and expect the wasps to just fall off, but it will kill them and keep them away.
I use a good bit of it to spray the house and yard, so I got my private applicators license, so I could buy Lorsban-a much more concentrated chemical from the chemical company. It is easy to get. Just go to the county extension office and watch and 30 minute tape and pass a very easy test afterward. Then you can buy other chemicals that are not available to the public. It will get a bunch of other critters too-roaches and such. We don't have any bugs in the house or shop.

Of course... your children may be born with 5 legs if you use this stuff, but it looks like it should cure your insect issues.

You can get insecticide to put in paint, paint stores will have it. I never remembered to ask the customers how well it worked over the years.
