I have a couple containers of Permatex Anti-Seize and both have thickened up on me to the point that I need to thin them with something. My first idea was just to use plain old motor oil... any other suggestions?
BTW, the tops are kept tight!

I use a lot of anti-seize and probably have 3-4 almost empty containers laying around the shop at any given time. Once the brush can't pickup any more(never could understand why they don't make the brush hit the bottom of the container)I abandon it for use at some other time. They wind up getting stiff and a little dried out. I've used ATF, Marvel oil, and 5-20 motor oil all with equal results. Either one will work.

I had this happen to me today. I put several spritzes of wd40 in the can and stirred it up. If that doesnt work out, i will try atf.

Hello, I've used hundreds of cans of Never-Seize in my career of forty seven years in a paper mill, any oil will work we usually used cutting oil because it was close by, never seen any problems, best life saver on bolts and gaskets on steam lines there is. Jim

I have used marvel mystery oil before, pretty much any oil will work. Add a little at a time & mix until it thins out to just right.

If you are depending on it retaining the useful properties at elevated temps then in my opinion there is no point in guessing. Throw them out and buy new.

If its general purpose stuff like keeping mower deck bolts from rusting together then agreed any oil will probably do.

How does this forum consistently (and almost magically) start threads on things that get on my mind a day or so after I start to wonder about something?

Just last week I was thinking about what I could use to thin some thickened Permatex anti seize, and wondering what a good approach could be to their brush cans seeming to not get to a third of the can’s contents.

We are like the Borg collective from Star Trek. What one knows, all will know. Resistance is futile.

WD40 softens copper antiseize nicely.

It wont effect the temp range etc.. the solvent evaporates, its the solids in the paste that do the work.

FOLLOW UP: Permatex Anti-Seize got thick...

As suggested in the tread, I sent a note to Permatex and asked them what should/could be added to their NS when it thickens. As one would expect, Permatex said nothing should be added to their NS... big surprise!

However they did offer to send a replacement container, which I got in the mail today! Nice!

On a side note, I did ask why the "short brush" in the can, the Rep said he had been asked that question often in his 22 years with the company, the answer he had been told is that is what the container company offers...the answer to one of life's little mysteries is not very satisfying.

A lot of us here use anti seize so bolts and nuts don't seize up years down the road after all that time in water/dirt/salt. Most of us don't "need" the HIGH tempature characteristics of it, so a couple squirts of any oil will be fine for most peoples needs and not affect the properties.

Google reads my email, fershure. But TGJ reads my mind!

I’d not searched anything on anti-sieze, nor had I said it aloud to anyone. It’s surely just coincidence, but it sure seems spooky sometimes the threads that get started here.

I guess I never over thought it. I just used whatever weight motor oil that was handy and stir a little bit into the can with the brush through the hole I have punched in the top.

I don't use it that often so I buy it by the stick (which I think is easier to apply anyways)

Timely thread. I just recently needed my Permatex anti-seize and found it had hardened up.

Thank you to the GJ Collective for providing an answer. :)

one thing they mentioned was mineral oil. so stores or get some from a 2005 and early VW/Audi etc power steering fluid as its mineral oil based.

Tall bottle, half full (like chips), product dries out, and brush does not reach bottom 1/3. Genius marketing. NAPA did just have it half off in December. I joined here too late to post of it in the sale dept.
