Stupid salt truck caused a stone chip when I passed tonight. The chips are tiny, maybe 1/8", sort of half moon shaped. Its definitely NOT your typical bullseye damage. I can hardly catch a fingernail on them. Im more concerned about them spreading if not addressed. Maybe they could be polished out?

I dont want to go through insurance for something so small, and I think its around $50 to have an autoglass do a repair, so Im wondering about the glass kits like the ones from Permatex? They seem to be more focused on bullseyes?

Weather is pretty ****** right now too. Supposed to snow and -6C tomorrow. Those kits are supposed to use UV to cure, might be hard to do under some snow:lol_hitti

Does not help you much........but
In the US many insurance windshield repairs are no cost and no deductible.

Yes if it looks like a tiny star still get it fixed. Because if you don’t it will contract and expand and cracks will expand out then you will need a new window.

I used a rain X kit from Amazon.

Ithe used a suction cup plunger setup and a screw to force UV cure epoxy into the crack. You push on the inside of the window to nope the crack up and the pressure forces it to fill.

Worked good, just make sure there's plenty of bright light to cure it. I did it on an overcast fall day and it only partly cured.

I used it on my Tundra back in 2010. It was a southern truck and with 20,000 miles it had 5-6 in the windshield and the local places would not touch it (they said they would only fix windshields with 2 chips if i remember right) It did a good job IMO. Just remember if you fix it or a repair shop fixes it you will still see it, it will only look a bit better.

April will be 9 years I have had this truck and no issues with the repair in the cold midwest (-25 last night, air temp, not windchill)

I used the Permatex kit last week to "repair" a star chip. It worked as advertised. Read the instructions carefully and follow them exactly. I have had glass shops "repair" chips. My work appears to be as good as the shop's. I might add having a warm sunny day probably helped.

I used the Permatex windshield repair kit. You want to stop that spider from spreading. Safelite also does repairs and they'll come to your house/work and the insurance will cover it.

I’ve fixed my own chips and had them professionally repaired... and either way you see them and it’s not like they were never there. Wait until one of those days with a glare and it’ll ruin your line of sight. I’m a believer in just getting a new windshield - that’s what insurance is for.

To sort of finish this thread about the repair kit, today I stopped at the local SpeedyGlass and asked the owner his opinion. The weather is cold and crappy so there was little chance of getting a clear window (pun intended) to do the repair anyways.

He stated the damage was too shallow to fill, too deep too buff out! Just my luck:bounce:

He said if he buffed it, their would be a hollow there and there would be wiping issues and/or you can have weird reflections in bright sunlight.

Not being a crack, there is nothing to spread, so he said the windshield will be fine.

Hes a good guy with like 30yrs owning the dealership so I trust his opinion, just ***** because I hate a dirty windshield and these small chips look like salt spots on the window, right in your field of vision. Oh well Ill have to just get used to looking past it.
