Pet Proof Sofa Underliner Material

Anyone here familiar with upholstery of sofas?

We've got two leather sofas that are holding up well to the pets on the top side, however the cat and dog both keep tearing up the fabric underliner underneath it.

I thought about replacing it with standard liner material and then covering that with 1/8" pegboard. That will probably work but it will make the sofa even heavier than it already is.

Is there a material that will hold up to this use without the pegboard? Thinking of some kind of breathable rip-stop nylon fabric but not sure what specs to be looking for.

Ditto, staple chicken wire to the bottom. Hardware cloth if you want to go whole hog.

For the cat just cover the material with strips of two-sided tape. They hate sticky and will keep away from it.

The plastic carpet runner... with the pointy nubs... mount it with the nubs aimed where you want to avoid pet damage... pets avoid walking on the nubs... so they should avoid it if mounted under the couch.
