Well, the last 45 days I've been night and day trying to tear my pete apart and put it back together. Let me start by saying I'm doing this job solely by myself, these pics are from my dads shop where the truck is, I don't like help to much and prefer to work at my own pace and know its done how I'd want it done the first time.

ok, now, I'm building a working class show truck or at least a sharp work truck haha. Anyways, I tore it down to have the frame sandblasted and painted. In the process I have installed a new front rearend housing, and new rebuild DS402 3.70 ratio rears, new battery boxes will be installed. I pulled it off the road august 14th with the anticipation that it would be done and back on the road sept 15th, the painter had the truck longer then expected and pushed the finish date way back.

I removed with hood and sleeper for paint, moved the fifth wheel back on the frame since my wheelbase is so long and my sleeper is so big I'm always overweight on my steer axle so now I can move weight to the drives. The painter sandblasted the frame, and put down 3 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint. He did a phenomenal job. I'm a hard one to please and I'm very happy with the job. Once the truck was hauled back from Lancaster, Pa, I started the rebuild. first thing was new plumbing from the front to the back. When I stretched the truck 4 years ago I didn't have the time to do the plumbing right so I just extended the air lines in the frame to make them 5 feet longer each. I didn't like the job so I spent the money and cleaned it up. The truck has new shocks on the back, I also had a stainless rear crossmember bent which should be drilled and fit tomorrow. I put all new air bags in the sleeper air ride suspension. The rear bags were in good shape and came out to paint so I put them back in. I'm also installing fiberglass rear full fenders which will hopefully be fit to the brackets in the next few days. I'm also going to install new front fenders on the hood, the passenger one got smashed in a wreck going into manhattan. There are no corners ever cut on my truck and I always go out of my way to do the job right. I can't afford shop rates on the road and everytime I have ever taken my truck to a shop its been a disaster and usually ends badly for the shop. I refuse to allow anyone to wrench on my truck or trailer unless I'm overseeing the job to the fullest extent. I never sit in waiting rooms.

I'm bad with keeping pics and thread going but I will try to do the best I can.

this is the truck before paint towing it out to pa on my buddies wagon.

3 of the 5 new air bags for the sleeper suspension
2012-09-29_20-50-54_765_zps688c416e.jpg

I build this bracket to split my air lines, my plumbing exits the rear of the frame but I'm equipped to pull a standard trailer as well with plumbing behind the sleeper. All stainless except the brass fittings.

I know nothing about trucking or working on big rigs, but that is a cool truck!

Keep the updates coming - thanks for sharing!

I've owned her for about 8 years, this is her about 6 years ago.

this is hooking up with a finished stretch job on the frame, my dad and I stretched it. I rebuilt the rears then but I never liked the 3.55 rear I put in it when I stretched so I went back down to 3.70's. I also lowered the truck when I stretched it.

stretching the frame. I went from a 265" factory wheelbase to a 330" wheelbase

after the frame and sleeper installed and before the frame paint done. This is right after a wash, headed to an SVBR photoshoot with my partner in crime, J_G

Very, very nice truck.

What is the distance from the back of the cab (ahead of the sleeper) to the very end of the frame?

When its ready to be retired, it will be a great candidate for a conversion to a motorhome.

There is nothing meaner looking on the road than a 379 Peterbilt!

Keep up the good work!

Nice! I wasn't aware you could stretch a frame like that. Welded, bolted or riveted? I had my 7500 shortened when new, but never heard of lengthening.

Very nice! please keep the pics and updates coming, looking forward to more.
Was it at Hunter Keystone Peterbuilt in Lancaster? I used to work at the Dodge dealer right in front of there. Lots of nice trucks in and out of there!

we welded the frames together then put a 56 inch 1/4" sleeve inside to give it more strength. We always make sure to center a crossmember on the weld and thats what this one is.

no, it was actually in Lititz, Pa at mervs sandblasting. He is a pretty reputable painter among the truck show circuit.

I used to drive for a little while, the company I was working for one time had us spotting trailers with a road rig that was 30 feet long from front to the back of the back tire it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be but it still sucked.

Subscribed. I've been out of the truck for 7 years and still miss it at times. I considered buying an older 379 to rebuild... I have a while before my youngest will be out of school.

There was a guy on here a while back that was gonna do a needle nose Pete.Don't know whatever became of it.
I started mine about 9 yrs ago. I got all the mechanical stuff done and was getting ready for body work and paint but the great state of California made it too hard to do anything with it.

Due to the smog regs I couldn't put it to work and with Historical Plates I can't work it and could only drive it to shows or Parades. This equaled 3 days per year. Plus fuel being $4.75/gallon vs 7 mpg so I sold it.

Here it is pulling into a truck show. Has it's original 280hp Cummins and a 5x3set of boxes and a R170 drive axle with 6.14 gears. The main trans has a huge overdrive and the truck would do nearly 100 mph with the 6.14's.

Rear axle is a tag.

So ... this looks like a 379 ExtHood which I think is 132" BBC or 11' BBC.

23+11 is 34'. That is a long truck.

Nosey question. Do you have a train whistle on it?

No train horns yet, I have a set of 5 chime nathan horns at home that I will eventually mount somewhere underneath. That probably won't be til the new cab is built and ready to set on.

The hood is a 127" BBC but bumper to bumper is roughly 34 feet.

How long is that thing going to be with a 48' trailer?

Um, I don't remember what it was with my 48', I pull a 52' stepdeck now and I'm 79'6" long, as long as I stay under 80 I'm pretty good. I only have to fudge a few oversize state permits.

I think I was about 77 with my 48' this trailer has a longer pin setting so it wouldn't just be 4 feet shorter.

Biggest sleeper Ive ever seen. Got a kitchenette as well as the bed?

sink, full size fridge, microwave, 2 couches that are covered when the bed is down, full size bed, shower and toilet, carry 40 gallons of cold water and 6 gallons of hot, the hot is fed off of the truck water heat and then the generator when the truck is off. The sleeper has a converter in it that clicks over from 12 volt to 110 20 seconds after the generator starts.

Sleeper is a 132" ICT (Indiana Custom Truck)

generator is a 10K yanmar with a marathon brushless flywheel driven generator head. It was designed and built by Martin Diesel in defiance, ohio

how much weight does that add to the truck? you must have a pretty regular run to afford to take all of that on and only pull a 48 footer.

Do you remember the "old Colony bar " across from Lancaster Peterbuilt on the Manhiem Pike? Used to hang there back in the 70s.

Nice job! Just my two cents now would be a great time to label all those air lines ever couple of feet.would make trouble shooting a bit easier...bill

Nuthin small about this build. I've been friends, moreso brothers, with Don for the last several years, and everything he does is big. I give him a lot of credit, as nothing he does is half assed, in the slightest. This'll def be a cool thread to follow. I know what he started with, and the major changes that have already taken place, as well as the others he has planned. Y'all enjoy, I'ma be here watching the show too! **reaches for popcorn**

I added roughly 4k with everything, I don't have a steady run pursay, I just follow the money and the freight. the 48' trailer I had made me money, I only bought the 52' because freight agents can't do there job and get proper dimensions on load of freight.

I don't really need to label them. I clustered all the 1/4" lines together and I'm pretty up on where they all go. in 8 years of owning the truck I have only had to fix 1 line in the frame, key is to protect everything from rubbing. Thank you for the tip though.

there are only 6 1/4" lines running down the driver side rail, 1 3/8" that comes from the rear of the cab back, and 1 5/8" line from the air tank under the door that runs back. the rest is wiring harnesses. 1 1/4" line on the passenger rail and 2 1/2" and those all come from the back of the cab back.

so you just stretched the frame so you could have a larger sleeper? just curious, looks like a wicked truck!!

for the most part yes, since I was young I always wanted a big sleeper and stretching the frame was the first step. It looked wicked without the big bunk but I think it looks good now too.
