I am an old fashioned copper water lines kind of guy.but I ran 3/4 pex to my garage, soon getting around to hooking it to the house plumbing and installing a sink & outside hydrant at the shop . When I bought the pex I also bought 2 sharkbite x ips fittings to use on the ends of the pex.
I have recently acquired several stainless crimp sleeves & a crimper for pex. I'm just wondering what the general consensus on using which system and the reasons why .
thank you all

I use crimps because of cost. Those shark bite fittings add a lot of $$ to a project for a couple fittings.

For 3/4 and smaller, I trust the stainless Oetiker clamps more than the copper crimp rings. Sharkbite isn’t something I’d trust in a spot where a leak will cause damage.

I have had those crimp bands on my house for 6yrs. Not a drop of water. I did it all my self.

Pex is a beautiful thing.

What PEX did you buy? That will determine what type of crimp or expanded connection/fittings you need to use.

I only use PEX-A or Pro PEX. This is the expanded type. The fittings are same ID as the PEX and the expanded PEX with ring will always be "trying" to return to its normal size and that puts the pressure on the fitting to keep it tight. The crimp type is always pushing against the crimp and away from the fitting.

Our plumber stubs all of our houses in with pex, runs conduit in the slab, then runs the pex through that so you can easily change any of it. As a matter fact it all he uses for water lines in the house

All my pex is crimped, but shortly after the plumber installed it,I had one starting to seep.It was the weekend of course, plumber doesn't answer his phone.Time to go to HD,crimping tool and all the fittings, extra shut off,and a chunk of pex.Shark bites as insurance policy. My first time with pex I was a bit apprehensive, but maybe the plumber hurried or didn't guage the fitting properly.I went and guaged his work, everything good.I watched the plumber to learn, and asked for more shut off valves,he asked WHY?In this case it was valuable. Owning the house, having the tools, small price to pay.

I'm also a big fan of the Oetiker clamps, have never had an issue. I have also used plenty of the push fit (Sharkbite) types with no problem. I used a Sharkbite brand after a company sent a sample, in a spot I couldn't get a clamp on ten years ago and that one is also holding up fine. I wouldn't be afraid to use them, especially since you already have them.

I use the sharkbites for temporary connections while remodeling.

I also keep a kits of caps for emergencies.

I use the clamps for all permanent connections because of cost and because I don't really trust the sharkbites. I have no experience or data to suggest the distrust is warranted.

I have always used the copper crimp rings. I've done 3 complete house replumbs and several smaller repair/upgrade jobs. I've never had a leak yet.

The only time I used a SharkBite was on an ice maker feed. I didn't feel like buying the 3/8" crimper just for that one run. So I bought a 1/2" to 3/8" SharkBite adapter. It was on the ice maker for the 7 years we lived in the house (and is probably still there with the new owners).

I have used crimp rings and shark bites, so many time I can't remember them all. Done properly, they last about forever.

Since sharkbite have only been out for 15 years, less than that as code approved. They use rubber orings to seal and like all rubber products they will fail. I have seen them failing now that they have been in use for 10 plus years.

Sharkbite will warrenty the dirty for 25 years is you cut out the fitting leaving pipe in both ends (so now you need two fittings) and will send you a new one after they determine if it was installation error or not.

They will only cover property damage for 10 years IF installed by a LICENSED plumber. They have great confidence in the longevity of their products.

Go with the pex.

The shark bites are great emergency repair fittings or temp caps for rough plumbing

I use the copper crimp rings. I wish I had sprung for the the expanding tool, but it is spendy and I had no idea how much I would end up using as much PEX as I have. Like others have said, it is great stuff. So easy to run and install leak free.
