They're for different styles of crimp rings. The clamp style is for ss rings that resemble hose clamps and the crimp style is for smooth copper rings that are crushed to make a crimp. (think crimp terminals). The one you use depends on which ring style you prefer.

i think the crimp rings are cheaper, but the tool is double the cost. go figure

i use the clamps with no problems. the clamps are like $.15/ea. basically a hose clamp that you cinch down, and a little metal nub fits into a hole and holds it in place.
