How do the pex tube uncoilers work? I've just seen small pics of them and never heard an explanation except "you need one" from the guys selling them.

Basically its like a spool. Its just like pulling wire off of a spool. Some are horizontal and some are vertical. anyone not using an uncoiler on any tubing project is asking for trouble(as well as a headache)

No matter what that coil is on, as soon as you cut the banding it will expand and unravel somewhat. I used 2 sawhorses and a piece of 4" PVC and had to keep helping it unwind when I did a 1000' coil. Yes, a pain in the **** but cheap.

I used a mechanics stool that had 4 wheels. a piece of plywood a stack of washers and lag bolt.
I Drilled a hole in the bottom of the stool and mounted it to the plywood with one Lag bolt through the washers as a pivot point. the stool was basically mounted to the plywood base and could spin on the wheels in a circle. then layed the coil of pex over the seat. i criss-crossed 2 2x4's on the base of the stool so the pex wouldnt hit the floor.

I used my arm. Let me explain. I have a large lot - over an acre - so I just put the 300' spool on my arm and walked backwards and unravelled the whole spool. I first tied the open end down so I could pull relative to that (I may have taped it but I think I tied it in a loop around one of my deck posts.)Allowing it to lie in the sun helped. Then I simply pulled the pex up onto the insulation board on my pad as I needed it. This system worked fine for me. This was the red 1/2" pex from Blueridge Co. I had to do this to the three spools I bought. No real problem. I did the entire job for my 32 x 28 pad in a couple of hours. The rented stapler helped a lot!

I chose to skip the uncoiler and just deal with the roll of tubing. While in some applications unrolling it across the yard, or unrolling it off a uncoiler may have been useful, I'm not sure that it would done any good in my situation.
If you are laying out your tubing in the standard back and forth pattern across the floor it would probably help. In my case I did the spiral method, spirally to the center of the space on 2' spacing, turning around in the center and going back to the beginning between the first tubes. Going back and forth doesn't require the tubing to be twisted, spiralling does.
