Pexto 676A Punch

This is the new toy of the day... An old Pexto 676A punch. The tag is also stamped "53-28" but I have no idea that that means. I can't seem to find anything online about it. I do know it is very heavy, I could just barely pick it up off my trailer and set it on the ground. It only came with one die, however I can make others unless I can find some online. I think the die is 3/8" but that is just a guess. I was able to punch a hole through 1/8 flat stock with little effort, though it was a pain since I had to push on the machine and the lever as it is not bolted to anything yet. A couple guys at the auction think it is capable of 5/16"-3/8" bar stock! This thing is AWESOME!

If you know anything about it or the aproximate age, I would like to hear from you.

Now that is a nice find. I have some Whitney punches that make the Whitney Jr.;s kook like a kid's toy, but that one is much heavier and would definitely be worth finding more punch sizes for if possible.

It is almost certainly older than 60's and could get back to the 30's based on the label style, (I've never seen one quite like that for Pexto stuff, and I'll almost always buy a Pexto tool if not outrageously priced) Pexto stuff is relatively rare unless you work in the sheet metal or iron worker industry.

Actual capacity I couldn't guess as I have nothing to scale it by.

EDIT : The second number set may be a date code; 28th week of 1953, but that is just a WAG

Actually I purchased a Whitney Jensen Jr. #5 at the same auction... The Pexto absolutely dwarfs that thing. I will add a new picture this evening with measurements or something to show the scale.

I measured the punch, it is roughly 24" x 24" not including the handle.

We have a few large pexto punches at work and used them daily until we got the iron worker. We still use them when we need to puch a lot of small holes quickly. We weld beam clamps to a piece of heavy channel to mount the punches and bend up jigs and stops out of 14 gauge.

Your punch is nice because it can be bolted directly to a bench.

Let me know if you need a source for die sets. I have a few dealers saved on the computer at work and I may even have a few odd sized punches that I could let you have (if I can find them under the pile).

Good God, my "Big" Whitney's are about 6X6 for the equivalent head size!

That's just freaking monstrous!

What do you plan to punch with it? (Besides damn near anything you want...)

Well, going to the current Pexto/Roper/Whitney website, this looks like the current offering for your punch:

The new one has a rated capacity of 4 tons. (No clue what yours is)

My "small" punches (No. 8 equivalent) are rated at < 5 tons, but the throat depth is only 2-1/8", while yours should be around 12" at a guess?

The No5 Jr's are rated 1/2 T. and only 1-3/4" throat.
