Phase Converter Wireing ??

Going to instal a Phase-A-Matic converter to power my new to me lathe. The instructions say the converter can be powered at all times with a very small amperage draw. The lathe will not get occasional use but is still a necessary tool in my home hot rod shop. Should I wire it up hot or switch the feed to the converter?

There is absolutely no need to run the converter when you are not using it. It will be set up with start/stop controls anyhow I would guess. Letting it run all the time would be kinda like going off and leaving the lights on in the shop, no reason for doing that.

Mine is powered all the time. You don't shut off your main every time you leave the garage so there is still power to the switches etc.

Yes, but the switches are not CONSUMING current when they are off. Idling that motor has to consume some current, it may not be a lot unloaded, but its still something. There is also the fire hazard angle of motor spinning, capacitors powered, etc that just, to me, doesn't make sense to have powered needlessly. Of course, its your electric bill.............

I'd wire it to a disconnect (lathe) to power it on when needed. The air compressor in my shop is the most used item so I leave the converter on while it's in use, naturally. If I know It won't be cycling on/off I turn the converter off. Idling the converter pulls nominal amps, but I average $25 a month for electricity.
