Just doing some reading (pre-emptive for a new run for a electric car charger).

NEC rules allow you to use tape, etc to identify the phase ID of any wire except for ground as long as it's 4AWG or larger.

Anything smaller, you cannot phase tape.

Can anyone confirm if it's 4AWG or larger ?
I found some older blurbs that its 6AWG or larger.

The #4 and larger vs. #6 and smaller is the grounded conductor (neutral). I'm not aware of any size difference for the marking of ungrounded conductors. There is a size stipulation for marking ungrounded conductors in a DC system.

See NEC 200.6 grounded conductors, 210.5 and 215.12 for ungrounded conductors.

I found some older blurbs that its 6AWG or larger.

Here's the run down(it depends on the conductor type AND size):

EGCs NEC 250.119
Insulated EGCs #6 and smaller must have continous outer finish that is green or green with one or more yellow stripes. On #4 and larger a conductor can be re-identified with green tape at every point that is accessible.

Grounded conductors/neutrals NEC 200.6(A) and (B)
Size #6 and smaller one of the following methods:
continuous white or gray finish
3 continuous white stripes along entire length on other than green insulation
(theres more but the above is the most common way)
Size #4 and larger
the above methods or by using white or gray marking such as tape at termination points

Ungrounded conductors do not have a size limitation for re-identifying conductors as far as I know. NEC 210.5 (C)(1),(2), and (3)...

Oh well. I guess there goes the idea of buying a 500 foot spool and using it for all 3. The neutral is the killer, unless I feel like taking 35 and making a spiral down the entire run

Car charger?

I'm assuming 240Vac? Does it require a neutral? I would think 2 blacks and a ground are all you would need. 240Vac is single phase so you don't need to 'phase tape' them.

Basically, it's about the same as hooking up your electric water heater.

Where are you putting the charger, can you just run romex to where it's going. Btw I never had issues with taping the neutral number 6 or larger just taping the ends
