Garage sales. Look at estate sales too. The ones with tools don't get that many tool buyers and loose electric motors are out there. But this does take time and patience. If you need it now, I'd say pawn shops, used tool places, but not Grainger. Paying retail for a motor is for companies that can afford it and take a write off.

May be cheaper to get a digital phase converter. I bought one for my Bridgeport mill and it was only around $100.

What HP are you looking for? I might have one in my stock of motors I pick up when go to yard sales. I'm like Matthias when it comes to motors.

You need to find the data plate get the frame number HP and rpm then figure out the model you need and I would look on eBay first

What hp/voltage/etc? I have a 2hp Baldor with about 5 hours on it that is essentially new. If I recall correctly, it is 15 amps at 220.

I also have a 2hp Dayton with similar specs and a bit more run time on it - though it works fine.

Many times the answer to why someone is selling something is "Because that's how he makes money."

A lot of parts that go into our older machines were found on eBay. Going with a high feedback seller on eBay is usually pretty safe.

Thanks. The Powermatic 66 TS I got from my school (replaced with Sawstop) has a 3 phase, 5HP motor...can't use that. Would like to replace with similar single phase 220v. are you aware of any problems matching mounting up holes, brackets etc. I have not taken anything apart yet.

Motor tag should have a box that reads "FR", which means frame, usually something like 184. If you get a single phase motor with the same frame number it should be an exact swap, all dimensions, shaft size, etc. should all be the same. Around here motors show up on Craigslist pretty frequently.

Be sure the rpm matches the old motor, probably 3450 rpm?

I think these take a 184C frame motor. You will need to modify (re-wire?) the original switch to work with single phase as well.

For that price, I'd buy a VFD and be done with it. In this case, there would be no configuration required, although I'd set it up for 5 second ramp on start and may be a 2 -4 second on shut down. Buy a small box for the VFD and you are good to go.

I was in similar situation 5-6 years ago. I ended up buying a new Leeson 120824.00 3hp 1 phase motor from eaby. You need 145TC frame size motor or 184TC depending on what pulley id you have.

The same co still sells them on ebay, I just don't see any at this time.

What magnetic starter do you have on the saw? Make sure you have the correct heaters and that you rewire the starter from 3 phase to single phase. owwm.com and org is a great resource
