Home Depot had quite a few of the Phillips T8 replacement LED tubes for only $9.97.

I am not sure if they will work in T12 fixtures but most LED tubes work in either.

I will add a photo later

Can you snap a pic with 1 LED tube beside an standard T8? Are they $9.97 each?

Note that an instant start ballast seems to be required (although Im guessing most T8 fixtures are new enough that they came with instant starts)

I have a few T8 fixtures that the ballasts have died, so this isnt a good "fix" for me. I went and bought the Feit LED worklights from Costco instead.

You can get 10 packs online for $90 so you basically get one bulb free. These bulbs are awesome IMO. I put them in the 3 bulb HD shop lights that were on clearance a while back and they are super bright.

They do only work with certain instant start ballasts (I think pretty much anything though... There is a table on the Philips site) and the fixtures need to be T8. THESE WILL NOT WORK WITH A T12 BALLAST!!! NOR WILL THEY WORK WITHOUT A BALLAST!!!

These have been in store for a while but were "no home". I bought some a few months ago but had to search the overheads for them as they didn't have a spot on the shelf for them yet.

Good info.

Just a reminder for those who don't know, the presence of a T12 bulb does not mean it is not a T8 instant start fixture. All my fixtures accept both and are the newer instant start digital ballasts, though I only have T8 bulbs in them.

I picked up 4 bulbs to try to replace some "aging" T8's (less than 3yrs old and dimming). They are marginally better, I can see some difference in the lighting but not a whole lot. The old bulbs were Sylvania 5000k's.

Not a bad price to replace dead bulbs with though. I will probably buy some more to replace the other dimmings ones.

Maybe I just didn't have much to compare them too. 4 lights, 12 bulbs is more than enough for my 24x24 garage. I was impressed.

I think that you should take one for the team and buy them, install, and report back.

We'll be eternally grateful and you'll be a hero!

These are now $5 each delivered. I know they are made in China and they are cheap, because they are from China. (See, doubly bad.)

But my 28 x 32 backyard garage could use 28 4ft bulbs to replace the flourescents. This batch would still be shy by a few bulbs. What says the garage gang?

That 6500k color temperature is going to be a very blue light which will cause poor color renditions. I would probably pass for that reason alone.

A warning about the ebay tubes - they are single end powered. That means you might (probably?) have to get new lamp holders AKA tombstones. I think that most fixtures are dual end powered. So you have added expense and work. I got these from amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012AHPPTQ/?tag=atomicindus08-20

They are dual-ended powered and you must bypass the ballast (easy). They are also 22 watts and 2400 lumens. I replaced four 32 watt fluorescent tubes with three of them and I think my garage is a bit brighter than it was.

Just got back from HD, actually buying another T8 fixture... saw the Phillips LED T8/12 bulbs. They were $6 for quantities of 10+ and you don't have to rewire each fixture.

I would much rather buy from a known manufacturer for a few extra bucks AND not have to rewire each fixture (think the time savings).

That said, I don't see the benefit at the moment. Maybe once the price drops, like LED retrofits for indoor cans...

Just curious. I have 4 bulb T8 fixtures. Are they going to be too bright with 4 LED tubes?

Phillips T8 fluorescents are rated near 2900 lumens and the LEDs at 2100... so I'd say no. If anything its just replacing old "dim" fluorescents, so it might seem much brighter.

Many bluish LEDs (6K+) seem brighter because of the color cast, but its harsh on the eyes. Bluer LEDs are cheaper and more powerful (race to highest lumens) so they more common in a lot of retrofit applications. Personally I think 4-5K is ideal for workspaces and lower 3-4K for leisurely areas.

Thank you for your input on these. As stated before I am in no hurry and am presently monitoring options.
