Recently moved from SoCal to Scottsdale. Purchased a AZ spec rock buggy that is wider 84” than my 82” Carson car hauler trailer. Need to mod the trailer so the buggy will fit. Can any of you experienced fab guys make any recommendations on suppliers of structural steel in the Phoenix metro area? I have used IMS in Irvine and Riverside for years but would like to try someone new. Thanks!

I used a large steel yard on the west side of I-17 in the Deer Valley area. Forget their name, but they will cut your lengths for you, making it easier to haul. I was buying 4x4 posts and an I-beam, plus floor plates to erect a hoist for my garage.

That's Advanced Steel. Been there a few times over the years. Their prices are a bit lower than Southwest Steel. It's a PIA to get to their yard and their drop organization is a mess IMO.

Southwest Steel is just a few block over. They're organized, easy in and out with truck and trailer, open asphalt yard. They will cut your steel to your length, drops are organized and sell by the lb., a bit pricier but in and out.

I deal with advanced metal sales on deer valley almost weekly. I pull in and out with my truck and trailer. You just have to pull around behind the office then walk in. I've only bought from southwest a couple times when I needed small piece of larger diameter pipe and they wereabout 30% more on almost everything.

I order from IMS often as well but will not deal with will call at their place i have it delivered. Also have ordered DOM round tube from totten tubes. Cheapest price i could get at that time.

I shop around and have found a couple mentioned above to be vary fair on price. Advanced and Southwest are near me and very competitive. I go to IMS only when I need specific items I can not find at either of these two. I also find they are cheaper often the IMS.

When I lived in the East Valley, I frequented American Metals in Mesa, Broadway or University near Mesa Drive as I recall.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I will check them out. I have had the same experience at IMS Irvine and Riverside. I got pretty fed up calling in will call orders 24 - 48 hours ahead and being told the order will be available when I arrived. I have spent my fair share of time waiting in the little room waiting for my order to be pulled, a real pisser given that I preordered. Not really surprised to hear that IMS Phoenix is the same. Like the selection and stock but the little room *****. Delivery is nice if I need enough material to make it worthwhile. Looking forward to trying out some new suppliers. Thanks again for recommendations.

I use IMS only for unusual steel, specialty metals. Like their variety of expanded metals, copper, aluminum, ornamental iron, oval, or square pre-cut thick plates, etc.. They have everything in stock.
And yes, they are super-slow if you need anything cut, etc.

Agree, if you want it IMS will have it for sure but it may come at a higher price.

When I built my last project, workbench, I shopped around and got some steel from and advance and other from Southwest. Was shocked by some of the price swings between them.

There's a YouTube user named Homesteadnomics, I think that is correct. He built a few things and some sponsorship from his local place. I believe it's one of those mentioned above. I've never been there but looked like a well stocked metal yard.
